Brake lamp warning light on

Hi forum,
have a '89 2.0 si, my dad bought the car at 100k, its at 128k now, but the brake lame warning lamp has been on since he got the car. the bulb is in the high mount brake light, and it is a good bulb. the high mount does not function, i am assuming because there is a LED brake light in the rear spoiler-wing thing. i assumed that when they added the LED spoiler and disconneted the high mount brake light, that maybe the Ohm feedback to the warning light is different with the LED display than with the traditional bulb.
Any suggestions to turn the brake lame out warning light off short of clipping the wire, or takeing the dash apart and disabling the bulb?

Re: Brake lamp warning light on

Mine did the exact same thing when I added the spoiler. My brake light warning comes on as soon as you brake the first time after starting it. I just put a piece of black electrical tape over it and haven't had to worry ever since.

Re: Brake lamp warning light on

If there is still an issue it could be the wiring at the rear brake lights. This is most likely a faulty brake light switch. This is the next step .Hoped this helped.

Re: Brake lamp warning light on

if you have a multi meter, just undo the bulb/connection for the high mount 3rd brake light, and see if you get power/ground to the connection. If the connector has the proper signals, and the bulb doesn't work, its either the bulb or the socket.

i have a 4th gen, but everytime i've had the 'brake lamp' light come one, a bulbs been out. The 'brake' light can be caused by low brake fluid....(does not apply in ur case though--O.P.)

not sure about other generations of Preludes, my 3rd generation has a little matrix on the main display that warns if doors are open, and in this case, if i have a brake lamp out. this is not the, also on the display elsewhere, brake warning light, which is activated by low fluid, parking brake engaged and other brake issues.
I will get my test light out and check the power and ground to my high mount rear brake light. there is a bulb in there, and it appears ok, but i have not tested it. and, would you want the high mount to light, when you have the LED display on the wing? more on this next week.

Re: Brake lamp warning light on

Those cars came with only one of the two. Either a spoiler or a third brake light.

Not necessarily...it depends on whether the spoiler was factory installed or dealer installed. If factory installed (like mine was), then there is no 3rd brake light on the rear shelf. If dealer installed, the 3rd light on the shelf is disabled, and the LED bar in the spoiler is used instead. But the 3rd brake light on the rear shelf is not removed.

The circuit for this is in one of the small plastic boxes attached to the tail lights (i forget if it's the left or right tail light). If you either add or remove a spoiler, you will get this brake light warning indicator. The best way to fix this is to swap the small plastic boxes on the tail lights with those from a 3rd gen that has the configuration you are now using. In other words, if you add a spoiler, you need the boxes from a 3rd gen that had a spoiler. And if you remove a spoiler, you need the boxes from a 3rd gen that didn't have a spoiler.

Re: Brake lamp warning light on

Found a 91 lude in the junkyard and will be getting both of those boxes tomorrow. It has no 3rd brake light so I'm assuming it had a spoiler. The trunk lid is gone. Looks like they're only held in with two little screws and one connector.
