I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

My battery light came on last week and I had to hold off my bracing project so that I could keep the Prelude on the road. I just got a regular rebuilt alternator for the Prelude, I didn't wanna try the accord alternators just yet. I've never replaced one before so lets just pray that I don't end up doing something retarded. I'm trying to decipher the helms manual at the moment can someone get a photo onto paint and circle the belt tensioner for me please?

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

Alright, so now I'm having issues. The alternator through bolt is stuck. I've hit it with a bunch of wd40 with no luck. Does anyone have any idea about what I should do at this point? I'm pretty much stuck. Also, should I removed the power steering pump? I don't have much working room at the moment.

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

To make life east just unbolt the ps pump and move it to the side. You are NOT going to break the bolt on the lower part of the alternator. You some muscle to break it lose. the upper on should be the same.

lol I'm trying to seem over dramatic. It's been held off. I don't have a complete set of tools and I'm having no choice but to remove the ps pump. I feel like a retard haha The easiest job has become really annoying. There isn't much working room in our car is there?

Take yourself over the sears and get a 3/8 flex handle. Aka breaker bar. $20.00. You have a 3/8 wratchet set? If not get one of those too mm/inch ,usually 29.00. Can't call yourself a mechanic without tools man.

I'm going to have to get tools sooner or later, I'm going to borrow my friends tools on Monday. I'm no mechanic, I'm just mechanically inclined =P

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

I don't know how many times a 10 min job has turned into like an hour and a half because I don't have the right tools. It's better just to hold off until you have the right tools so you don't end up breaking something. The penetrating oil is usually good for stuck bolts, just make sure you apply even pressure to keep from snapping the bolt. You could also try the old combination wrench trick were you put the open end of one long wrench into a closed end of another wrench to make one real long wrench. My dad and grandfather (both mechanics) taught me that trick. I don't know how many times I have used it to save me from frustration with a stuck bolt. Anyway, let us know how it turns out.

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

Alright so here's an update. I got the car to my friends house to do the job. We got started and got the power steering pump off and then he got a call from where he worked, he had an hour to get there so we had to rush and get everything back together. Basically a bolt broke on the pump and tore up the gasket seal. PS Fluid leaked everywhere and now I have no power steering. I'm not too worried, to me this is an excuse to delete the power steering. So we removed the PS reservoir to stop the leak for the time being.

I have two questions. One we took off a hose from the reservoir that connected to the radiator, is it okay to have that off? Second can someone link me to a write up on deleting the power steering? I'm doing it with the help of my friend, but I want to be a bit more informed.

Do they make a manual steering rack for our whips? Driving a power steering rack without power steering is well the dumbest thing ever

There are no manual racks for our cars, then again there isn't any for DC integras haha. I'm leaning towards handing it over to my mechanic since I don't like messing with touchy things like brakes and steering. I'll let him sort out the power steering while I work on the alternator. This is a learning experience for me haha breaking my lude.

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

you shoulda just voided the fluid to get it home and finished without rushing. Well the good news is you're gonna get those breaker bar arms from all that manual parking. The fluid can be replaced, the unit, not so sure. And don't feel bad everyone makes mistakes. How you supposed to learn anything if you don't? Rofl!

Re: I'm replacing my alternator, pray for my prelude!

This is for 5th gen, but same concept.

How to delete p/s and Loop the Lines

I used this write-up when I did it on my 3rd gen. You could have unbolted the p/s pump from it's bracket and leave the lines connected and just swing it out of the way so as not to make a mess. But oh well.

If you take it to your mechanic, all he will be willing to do is fix the power steering system. It sounds like you actually took the housing apart.

Anyway, when you delete power steering, make sure you loop the lines (as per write-up); otherwise, you'll be manually pushing the fluid throughout the p/s system which is quite difficult. Looping the lines makes it much easier.

The line you disconnected from the radiator area is for the p/s fluid cooler line. You can remove that as well, it just unbolts.

Good luck!

P.S. You should download the service manual, it makes life easier with these cars.

Downloadable shop manual

You have to create a free account but it's worth it.

Hey man, thanks a lot for the links, I found write ups for all generations except the 3rd gen it helps out quite a lot to know you used this write up. I'm going to roll without power steering. It's a learning experience haha.

+1 Rep for you.

I finally replaced the alternator, it turns out that if I just thought a little harder I would have realized that I should have just unbolted the pump from the bracket, for some reason, even though the ps line is flexible I felt like it shouldn't be bent more that 30 degrees haha. Turns out it really was just a one hour job and... It took me three days LMAO. Gotta love my mechanical skills and the 3rd gen.
