New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

Hello there everyone! I am new to the website just as i am new to owning a prelude.

After months of looking I just bought my first car, and im happy to say its a '91 Honda Prelude Si.

The thing that attracted me most to this one in particular (and why I drove 2 hours to get it) was its engine; the rare B21a! the fact that it turned out to be an ALB and getting it all for $2,300 is a bonus.

But it didnt come without its problems, it has some suspension issues and I think itll need new struts and maybe a ball joint or two, and most promenantly (and irritatingly), the gauges refusing to work.

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

I plan to fix its problems first (obviously). Then in the future install a cold air intake, 4ws (hopefully), then fix the dents and rust spots and give it a fresh coat of original paint (and since I work at an auto body shop the last part should come easy). After that i simply plan to enjoy. :)

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

There are a few deep scratches that have rusted that you cant see in the pictures, and the rear window has rust that im hoping isnt eating through. But other than that the paint is really good, it might only need a little spot finish where the dents are and a little bit of clear coat and i can bring it back to when it rolled off the lot.

Also thanks itsdatoneguy, ill have to check but i dont think its the fuses since they still will spark to life suddenly with a burst of touretts :P

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

Congrats on the new lude, and welcome to your new addiction. I can't see the pics from my work computer, but it sounds like it looks nice.

Take care of the rust before you do anything else. The longer you let it go the worse it's gonna be.

The 90/91 Si models are the nicest, but the b21 is not really rare, and not the desired engine. It has FRM cylinder sleeves, which while they resits wear, will cause piston rings to prematurely wear. If it's not already burning oil it will soon. It has slightly more power, but it's not really noticeable. I had a 91 Si and enjoy the power band on the 89 a little more. A lot of guys swap a b20 in for the b21 to pretty much eliminate the oil burning problem.

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

I believe that's the B21a1 you are speaking of. If ive done my research correctly (and the engine stamp is correct), then this is the JDM B21a, the ones only put in the Si states, which had iron sleeves, not FRM. I was told a previous owner swapped it in.

The b21a is the JDM version of the b21a1, you are correct about that. But it also has FRM sleeves. I looked in one that I found in the junkyard. It's pretty easy to tell the difference when looking at them. If yours has iron sleeves then the previous owner had some machine work done.

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

Are you sure, could it have been a b21a1 engine from a JDM car? Cus this website i read said the SiState engine has iron sleeves.

3rd Generation Honda Prelude

"The SiStates model, which was the last of the 3rd Generation Preludes and sold in Japan only, came with an improved iron-sleeved version of the B21 engine. This engine was the most reliable and powerful of the series, featuring a rather high compression ratio of 10.7:1 for improved fuel economy."

as well as a thread i found here:

http://www.preludepower.com/forums/a.../t-230899.html

i guess ill have to check mine out to be sure.

Re: New Proud 3g Prlude Owner

I'm sure it had a b21a stamp on the block. And the head was off. I'm positive it had FRM sleeves. But I can't verify it came out of a SiStates because we didn't get any of those here. Maybe there were other versions of the b21a. I don't know any more than what I saw. Hopefully you're right and yours has iron sleeves. That would be ideal. And if you swap a b20a5 head onto that you will increase the compression ratio and get a little performance bump as well.
