1990 Prelude SR failed etest today

First off I will introduce myself, My name is Jay I live in Ontario and love my Hondas. Myself I drive a Civic Si but when I got home after vacation in July my son had spent his summer savings on this Prelude.

Long story short, it looks really nice I must admit but a 21 yr old car in Canada is definately gonna come with some greif. Iv'e enjoyed the project thus far and it's actully done some good for our relationship, however when I took it for it's e-test this morning this is what I got for my $40.00.

at 40 km/h
HC ppm 213
CO % 0.93
NO ppm 2995
rpm 2017
Dilution 14.46

curb idle
hc ppm 388
co % 0.58
rpm 774
dilution 14.23

None of these #'s really mean much but I am fairly mechanically inclined. Any tips as to where to start. The mechanic told me Hondas are bad for the cats ?? It has 240,000 km on the engine and it seems to have a slight upper knock but runs ok. No dash lights on but that doesn't mean theres not any issues. it had an aftermarket intake but I connected the factory intake before I took it in. If I'm missing any other info pls let me know. Finally, I do read and do post all my results and I try to help others when I know the answers. just letting everyone know that I'm here to get info and share info, not bail when I get what I need. Thank You

Re: 1990 Prelude SR failed etest today

Well I just spoke to a couple Tune up guys at a Honda dealer and this is what they said.. Based on the readings of the e-test the engine is pretty much baffed. Sometimes a stuck egr will cause large #'s but my readings were off the charts. From what they tell me the Preludes were some of the worst for failing e-tests. I will keep digging but this car might end up 4 sale real soon. It's too bad, it's in amazing condition inside and out and it has some nice Voxx wheels on it too but I'm not into any engine swaps, I'm way too busy to take on that .

start where itsdatoneguy said.
mainly o2's, cat, egr (cleaning), rust exhaust, and pcv (cleaning).
i too have never had a car that went through emissions testing. good luck and honestly...
try to keep the lude if you can, amazing cars and extremely fun to drive.
welcome to the site

You have a lean misfire. Check for vacuum leaks, clean EGR, also check operation of EGR.

Re: 1990 Prelude SR failed etest today

Thanks for replies, I will post what I find and or decide to do. I did notice while replacing the muffler that there is a hell of a lot of black water spuing out, never seen that before. At first I thought it might have been coolant via the head gasket but I know that sweet smell and it wasn't that.

We all know that a new cat and O2 sensors covers most failures. The EGR only works as long as those 4 little holes aren't clogged. Also use some dry gas in the tank. It's basically alcohol so it doesn't produce any hydrocarbons.

There is another option I also live in Ontario and there are like bubbles if you will / places that you do not need E testing. I live in Walkerton and there is no E test here. It's kinda sneaky but lets say you have family in a area that doesn't need an e test and your son moves and changes his adress to there and registers his car all your problems are resolved. Just some info for ya.

Re: 1990 Prelude SR failed etest today

One more thing to add, is anything after the catalytic converter is not an emissions device. I definitely would look out for shoddy exhaust piping. Its good for neatness and just may help you out that little bit. Something is causing your vehicle to run lean. The results your posting are really outrageous, its almost as if you didn't have any emissions devices on the car.

I have my California Smog results from two weeks ago posted on my build thread if you want to take a look at them. California is pretty strict on these laws. Click here: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread
