Lude won't turn over!

Hey guys! As you can read by the title. My 91 Prelude isn't cranking up. I noticed yesterday the car becoming more and more sluggish at starting. it made the noise suggesting that the battery was going dead. Today I went out to crank it up. Wouldn't turn over at all. no clicking noise or anything. I can turn the key all the way and get nothing. All dash lights will come on bright as well..suggesting that my battery isn't dead. I'm going to borrow a voltmeter to check the voltage and see if it's the battery, but I don't think it's dead. I had a tune up about a year+ ago. battery and alternator are about a year old as well. any thoughts on what's causing it to not crank would be helpful. Starter????? Thanks-Mark

Re: Lude won't turn over!

I went out today and tried to start her up. It cranked all times I tried to start the engine. Still really slooow and sluggish to start. roo-roo-roo-roo fire up! Like it's hurting and then it finally cranks. one of the cranks it had a nasty sputter sound that popped twice then started up. Still very unsure as to what the culprit is for the very poor ignition. battery is fine. power windows lights etc work great. Any thoughts would be much appreciated-Mark

Re: Lude won't turn over!

Skeme-Thanks for the reply! How would I go about troubleshooting the fuel pump. I also thought it could be going out?? Fuel Filter was replaced about a year ago

Re: Lude won't turn over!

sounds like your battery is almost dead. try starting it while jumped by another car. i'm almost positive it'll fire up like that.

Re: Lude won't turn over!

so a guy in my apt complex works on cars..he's actually working on an old 80's mercedes benz that he converted to vegetable oil haha. but we both figured it was the starter as well. removed it from the lude..took it to auto zone to test on the desk. it said it "passed" but both employees said it was weak sounding which prob explains the very odd intermittent starting. it wouldn't crank at all today. I hooked it up with jumper cables and it wouldn't turn over..or click..no noise..NO DICE! so I bought a new starter. going to install it tomm and I'll come back and hopefully have something postive to say. thanks fellow PZ peeps!

Re: Lude won't turn over!

wow..so I'm obviously a noob and an idiot. my engine is swapped. not stock. I have a JDM b20a instead of the stock 91 prelude engine. got a starter for a 91 prelude..it doesn't fit. can someone steer me in the right direction as to what to order...what car did my engine come from??? 88-91 prelude??? curious that the starters were different. thanks for the help guys-mark

Re: Lude won't turn over!

I put a b20a in mine and could've sworn I used my b20a5 starter cause it arrived with the engine and flywheel only . It was an automatic and I swapped it over to a manual. It was always a manual but the jdm engine delivered was an automatic. Could be wrong about that but I'd go to another car parts place and hold them up side by side. Might have been given the wrong one. Last resort is the junkyard. Also, put your voltmeter on the alternator while it's running to see if you get 13 or 14 volts. If you are then it might be a bad battery. Borrow someone elses battery and see if it still cranks slow. If it does then it's the starter but it might be bad terminals too. Have fun.

Re: Lude won't turn over!

yeah the 91 starter was different then the one I have in the engine now. since it passed 4out4 times at auto zone. I re-installed. fully charged my battery. tried to crank. same thing no noise or a click or anything. in my service manual it has starter relay, ignition and clutch interlock switch as other options. I removed the starter relay to test for continuity. Can someone tell me how to test the relay and see if it's bad. not quite sure how. Also going to try the direct jumper wire..bypassing the black/white wire on the starter to try and crank the car. thanks for the feedback!

Re: Lude won't turn over!

The only difference in starters is auto vs manual transmissions. I am using a starter from a 91 Si (b21a1) 5 speed on my 89 Si (b20a) 5 speed.

As far as your starting problem goes, Check all your grounds and make sure then are all good.

Re: Lude won't turn over!

duude. so right! I noticed that when going to another store. so here's some results on the starter I pulled from my engine. I had it tested at 3...THREE automotive stores..ALL THREE had different results. Auto zone=passed all three criteria...a local store..3 out of 5..failed on the amp draw..I believe and one other that unfortunately I don't remember. Pep Boys..it failed all 5 criteria!! WTF!! HAHA..soo I'm buying a new one and installing tomm..holy hell. such a hassle to figure this no start..hopefully this is the resolution..thanks for keeping up with this thread guys...I need all the comments/advice etc-Mark

Re: Lude won't turn over!

Hey guys. wanted to post and say that it was indeed the starter! Bought a brand new one(Bosch) installed it...and initially no crank..I almost wanted to push the Lude off a cliff...but I'm so attached to this damn car I'll go broke fixing it forever haha. I remembered I had trouble with the neutral safety switch. The plastic piece that pushes the plunger in broke..and I jimmy rigged something and it came undone..got some epoxy put another piece of plastic up there. now the clutch was pushing the plunger all the way in..letting the engine know "hey...you can go ahead and crank now" shazam! she started right up. sooo thanks so much for all the advice..I'm just happy there's a place for us prelude peeps to ask questions and post advice. I have other issues..but for now I'll enjoy this small victory!-Mark

From what I've read, they didn't start installing that switch until the 89 model year.

Re: Lude won't turn over!

That's exactly why they started putting that switch in. I have a friend who punched a hole in his garage when he started his lude in gear without pushing in the clutch. Surprisingly it didn't do much to the car except scratch the paint, but the garage was pretty messed up.
