Icon11 B21a1 owners hollah at your boy!!

Kid(asking about my Prelude):Hey, what motor is in there?
Me: A b21.
Kid: Whoa, that's hot man, CRV motor, right on!
Me: Yah, not bad huh?
Kid: You gonna do CRV-Vtec man?
Me: I have to go now...

(True story, which happened twice)

Okay, i see a lot of us here currently have the b21a1 motor, either the 2nd transplant or original.

Here is my experience with this rarity, hated-on motor.

It burns oil, a lot now.
When i first acquired the car, i had a vague idea about the oil burning through Hondaprelude.com <---RIP
I didn't think any mind of it though, i just wanted a 3g Prelude.
Nevertheless, i did all sorts of experimental oil use, lol. I started to use 10w-30, synthetic. The oil burning wasn't that bad then, i did notice that the oil became black very quick, within 2 weeks of driving everyday averaging 20 miles per day.
Next, i started to use a K&N oil filter. That didn't help at all, it did though, cease dry starts.
After that, i started to use Lucas oil stabilizer. The entire bottle went in with my Castrol syntec oil change. I'm pretty sure my oil pump was worked out for those few months.
That combo yielded me the best results in slowing the oil burning.
It was sure pricey i have to admit.
After that, i tried a bottle of engine restore, which supposedly helps seals and such.
BS.
Now, i'm currently using regular Castrol oil, 10w-30 with a Fram oil filter.
I add about .5 qt every 200ish miles.

So here are some tips i have learned from the years:

-Try not to live past 5k RPM
-Please, dont bounce off the rev-limiter
-2000 mile oil changes will help prolong the motor.
-Use regular oil for oil changes, synthetic is not worth the money in a b21a1
-Always carry a bottle of engine oil in your trunk.
-Always check your oil dipstick at least twice a week.

Now, im not saying all b21a1's burn oil. But the majority do. Why is this? A lot of people point to the FRM cylinder walls being very, very strong thus damaging the piston rings within time. This causes blow by, which in turn causes the motor oil to become black very fast. Most of our motors should be in the 150-200k mile zone. I'm currently around 188,000, original.

I also noticed a lot of b21a1's throw connecting rods, # 3 or 4 usually. H23a1's are very similar in design with the b21a1. They also tend to throw connecting rods as well. In fact, h23a1's also use FRM cylinder walls, but not as pronounced as the b21a1. This why i do not suggest you new kats to start to think that this motor is a b16a and start to redline every shift, that is a NO-NO!! besides, we have a lot more torque, we dont need to rev skyhigh. We can though, sport that we have the biggest displacement for the B series. Which is basically it The b21a1 was the experiment only North America got. We hit the market first with all of this FRM nonsense.

FYI: the NSX C series & H series, f20/f22(S2000) also uses FRM.

So keep in mind at all times, your b21a1 is a "sensitive" motor.

So, far all you b21a1 people, hollah at your boy!

haha my other B21A1 spun a mainbearing between pistons 3 and 4 at a little over 140k but my rebuilt B21A1 is running strong with little to no oil burnage, but she's still young, she only has about 11000 on her, me personally i love the motor and i love to see the look on Civic owners faces when you tell them you have a B21A1, that puzzled look gets me everytime, most of them don't even know that the B21 exists

Thats so funny, I picked up this 90 Prelude from a kid for $60 he threw the # 2 connecting rod. I found another motor (salvage $400) and replaced front main, rear main, both cam seals, new clutch, re surfaced the fly wheel, new water pump and timing belt. I still burn oil. I think its the valve seals. It only smokes at high rev, never smokes at idle or moderate takeoffs. I didn't remove the head but now I believe I am going to break er down again, this time bore the cylinders, run oversized pistons and higher torque rated rods. Get the head redone the works, maybe even hotter cams, totally clean and paint underhood, complete 2 1/2 in exhaust all the way back. Plus I have some body work to be done new quarter panel body kit, wheels. Hope to have it all done within one year. May even do some EFI work (bigger injectors) When I'm done it should make for a sweet ride. I'm also looking to find a 5th Gen Lude if you guys know anyone that is selling?

Re: B21a1 owners hollah at your boy!!

I've had my 91SI 2.1 for a year now. It has 213K on the original motor and does not leak any oil at all. I check it often. My only issue is in the mornings when I first start it up, the power steering cuts out one or twice. It also has the factory clutch, plate and all. The clutch shows very little wear for it's age. As for RPMS, if your 2.1 is running decent, you will rarely need to go above 3K RPMs in daily driving as it has plenty of torque. I am very happy with that car as it is fun, but not bad on gas. I hope you have as good luck with your's as I am having with mine.

No, it will not mate up to the b21. You need to find another 3rd gen transmission.

Re: B21a1 owners hollah at your boy!!

sorry to thead i was wondering what u all think about a all wheel drive 3g prelude. Using the crv drive train with a modified bell housing to fit the 3g lude b20/b21 motors it would b able to go from front wheel drive to all wheel drive if the slip switch is modified to only turn the rear diff on or off by a dash mounted switch not by it self. Feel free to yell at me about how stupid it is.

Hello,

That was alot of good information on the B21a1 but I am struggling to find a manufacturer that supplies headers for that motor ou of stainless steel. What is the deal with no one carrying crap for this car.

Thanks

I figure I'll throw my hat in the ring. I got a 90 Si 4WS with the B21a1. 163k original miles. This spring Im either doing an H22 swap or replacing the rings and valve seals. Great little motor though. Nice write up.

Re: B21a1 owners hollah at your boy!!

Personally, i'm more a fan of the 1.7ltr GSR motor from the early 90's. That was the start of something very special... Well among many other things leading up to that. However, this thread forced me to read up on the prelude motor. Back in 1986-87 they made the B20A that made 160hp? That's crazy power for n/a in the 80's. I always Honda's ingenuity, but that's pretty awesome.
