Upgrading to 4WS?

Hi guys. I introduced myself in the introductions section a while back but this is my first post aside from that. I'm looking at getting a 3rd gen Prelude and I'm wondering if it's practical/worthwhile upgrading a non-4WS lude to 4WS? Quite a lot of the manual ludes I can find that are for sale over here in NZ don't have it and while I wouldn't really mind that it's not really a 3rd gen without 4WS is it?

Thanks.

Re: Upgrading to 4WS?

It's great to have 4ws. My Prelude didn't have it but nevertheless it still handled like it was on rails, surgical precision handling for a front wheel drive car.

I'd wait it out and find a 3rd gen with 4ws. You can upgrade a non 4ws to a 4ws, but you being in NZ, you can contact your Grey import dealer and locate a Prelude SI TCV: 4ws, Traction control, ABS...i mean, in NZ you have limitless options on importing cars...especially from Japan or Singapore where they are the worlds most importers of used cars, right hand drive that is...

Re: Upgrading to 4WS?

It's definitely worth it in my opinion. My first 3rd gen was an 89 S (carbie lude). I came across a 4ws lude in the junkyard one day and pulled all the necessary parts for the swap off that car. Then I looked into what was involved in the swap. I was hesitant to do it, especially on an S. But decided to take the plunge one day. It really wasn't that difficult to do. The toughest part was getting the lower control arm bolts out. But after it was done I was so happy I took the time to do it. And it was a major selling point when I sold it to a friend of mine four years ago. And yes, he's still driving it today.

Re: Upgrading to 4WS?

i have a 4ws prelude. i have had 2 3rd gen 4ws preludes and 2 5th gen 4ws preludes. i have also had 2 3rd gen ludes which didnt have 4ws. and tbh i wouldnt waste my money on 4ws conversions just for the sake of a smaller turning circle. I personally reckon the ludes without 4ws handle a lot better

Re: Upgrading to 4WS?

Thanks for the replies everyone! Currently I'm young and poor so importing a car wouldn't be an option at this stage, but in the future it certainly may be. Cheers for the feedback about 4WS too, I found a really good tutorial up on Mustardcat's site too so if I come across the parts at the right price I'll definitely consider it. Currently I'm looking at this lude and going to view it today, hopefully it's in good enough nick to be worth buying. I'm most worried about the "rust that needs fixing" as there are no photos of it and the interior looks a bit... blargh, but salvageable.

I also have a question about the rear bumper/taillight assembly. More to the point, would the rear off a facelifted prelude (90-91) fit on the pre-facelift (88-89) prelude without too much trouble? I've decided that I want my car to be as clean and straight as possible without going to ridiculous lengths (shaving all door handles is actually quite common among imports here, but IMO is just a bit too impractical for a daily driver) so I was thinking of shaving off the badges, making the front indicators clear (with orange bulbs) and making the rear look something like this. (I borrowed a photo of a reasonably clean lude from the picture thread and shopped it a bit to show you what I mean, hope you don't mind). Would such a modification to the lights be achieveable without going to an expensive body shop?

Cheers guys, I really appreciate the help and feedback and I hope to be joining the ranks of 3rd-gen owners soon!

Re: Upgrading to 4WS?

Sorry, I can't view your pics for some reason. But I'll answer your question about the 90/91 tail lights on an 88/89. It can and has been done. But it's a lot of work to do it right. You'll need a donor car of course, and you'll need the following parts:

Trunk lid.
Tear bumper cover.
Rear bumper support.
All three sections of the tail lights.
Rear pan section from donor car. (this is optional, but necessary if you want to do it right)

As noted above, the rear pan is optional. But because the cut-outs and mounting holes for the 90/91 tail lights is completely different from the 88/89, you would need to butcher 88/89 pan in order to fit the new tail lights. Then you'll need to figure out a good way of sealing all the openings so that you don't get water in your trunk. The other issue with using the existing 88/89 rear pan is that the trunk keyhole is in a different position than it is on the 9/91.

Keep in mind that pretty much anything can be done on a car given enough time and money. You're only limited by your imagination and your wallet, lol.
