JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Alright, so basically this is going to be a slow updating thread due to being strapped for cash, but I just picked up another 88 si for free, it has a blown head gasket, I'm going to use it as a parts car and a test bed. I'm looking around for a new welder, because I'm going to finish getting rid of the sound deadening and I want to seam weld my chassis. Eventually I want to build my b20a5 for boost, I want to build the motor similarly to mulrich's prelude.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

I think you mean MUlrich07's prelude. The way his Prelude used to be, to be more precise. I'm not sure if I'm breaking any forum rules by posting a link to another forum, but you seem unaware of this...

F/S 3rd Gen: Booster 91 Prelude partout - Honda Prelude Forum : Honda Prelude Forums

Good luck with your build, and don't give up.

Good luck with your build, also, try to keep our donor body as mint as possible, in the event someone wants a second h22 beast :ahem: LOL

haha! are you talking about yourself or sean? lmfao or me! XD
I was planning on using the donor body to experiment on, but I think keeping it clean will most likely be the best idea! We will see what the condition of it will be once I get my welder. haha I might not want it I would probably send it to you! haha

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Alright my build can finally start! I passed smog on my first run. Everything went well except I had to do my fuel evap test twice. My hydrocarbons measured really high, but that's it. Everything else was pretty low. The guy who ran the test loved my car. In fact he was really interested in it when it first went on sale in 87'. The guy is obviously a car enthusiast, he had a Miata and a few other toys.

I deleted my resonator, I'm still looking for the 8th gen Civic SI muffler. Turns out everything past the catalytic converter isn't considered a smog device, so I'm free to run whatever I choose as long as it isn't too loud. This opens up lots of options.

I took out my fog lights since one was broken and the other wasn't working. I might just have a blown fuse or something I'll check that out and try a rewire.

Pictures are coming soon.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

My alternator and my battery seems just fine which is leaving me stumped, tomorrow I'll be able to rule this out correctly. Over the time I was gone my family picked up an 05 Corolla. I'm going to take that battery and see if my car starts with no issues, it does then I think I'm right in saying so, my alternator is about gone. If it doesn't then I'll move on to checking out my starter motor.

I was out and about today driving around to birthdays, I decided to open up the car for the first time at wide open throttle and I believe I caused a lot of damage to my clutch. This is what happened I was going about 40 and I was in 3rd gear so the revs were at about 2k I might be an absolute idiot for doing this, but when I opened it up, the needle on the tach shot up and my speed was slowly going up. I had 3 passengers, and my car didn't seem to like that. I definitely smelled burning. Am I stupid for having some optimism and hoping that this is normal for manuals?

One last thing I've been looking into it and it seems that my problems might just be my starter motor.

My 3rd Gen as it sits tonight.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

This coming week I'm going to start on making a c pillar brace at school, since I'll have access to all different types of welders a lot of metal I can "borrow"

Also a bump for the questions I have in my previous post.

When I get around to working on my clutch and have the money I think I'll try the mustardcat, Integra clutch and flywheel mod. as shown here 90-91 Integra Clutch And Flywheel Install Into 88-89 Prelude

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Honestly you have to see for yourself. Could just be the throw out bearings, if it's a engaging issue. Smells from a car is always bad. While on the mustardcat site, download the CAD diagram for his tower braces (if he took it down, oops) they were quality pieces. Had a set.

I've got the symptoms of a worn clutch. It's finally begun to slip so I'll have to see what to do with it. At this moment I've deciding on what to do when I pull the transmission or even if I will do it myself for that matter. At the moment the car is drivable and I've ruled out my alternator and battery for the starting problems. I've narrowed it down to my starter motor. I'll have that replaced soon.

Thanks Sideswipe SI, I forgot about the strut tower braces on his site. I was looking into the cusco brace, but since I want to build everything myself I'll download that diagram. We have the machine to use the diagram at school too so I can make use of that.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

A friend of mine found me this.

This is the oem exhaust from the Civic SI! I've been waiting for one to pop up for ages. If I decide to jump on the opportunity, then I'm prepared to do the 300 mile round trip to get the exhaust.

I washed the car today too.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Instead of wasting time on the forum, I went out and started on a mustardcat diy for "smoother shifting" so far I've only done the shifter end, I'll do the engine bay end tomorrow. I took a drive around the neighborhood and my gear shifts are definately a lot nicer, they don't feel as notchy as before. Once I finish the other half of the job everything should be how they should. I did get pretty irritated with putting the shifter back together.

Smoother Shifting

Hella dirty

Lubed and feeling better

I used grease meant for bikes, sue me

I'm going to open it up again today. I did the cable on engine bay side. I learned I'm not good with cotter pins.

I'm on the search once again for the exhaust. I'm going to start posting on craigslist, the dude sold the exhaust the day I was going to drive over. It will come in time!

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

I tore out the back seats today. I've been trying to find out where to mount the c-pillar bar. I've decided on making a multipoint brace. Below is a photo of what I have to work with. I'll be using preexisting holes. First is the top mount for the rear seat belts and second mounts will be the two for the brackets to the rear seats. I'll be getting stronger bolts, since the two there are insufficient in my mind.

The green lines would be a mild setup
The blue lines are a second design, just add that to the green lines.

What do you guys think?

We have a lot of mild steel sitting around the metalshop. What are you guy's opinions on using mild steel? I'm prepared to buy stainless. I've never welded stainless steel before, I'm sure we can put together a setup though.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Well I went to pick n pull and didn't find the lips I wanted for anything! I did manage to get new fogs and the missing side moulding. One good thing did happen though. I found a B20A in one of the wrecks. I think my engine build may just come together now. How does a b20a block and b21 head sound for turbo toughness? It sounds pretty badass to me! I'm going to head back to another junk yard to get the lips I want, but in the meantime. I have fogs now! It's so annoying to replace the bulbs.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

Nice pickup on the fogs. Why not get the Mustardcat Rear Tower bar done instead? Does about the same thing, saves the rear seats? it's in the CAD diagrams. Front and rear made a huge difference. Looking at all these 3rd gen progress thread makes me want to get another one. dammit.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

I'm not doing the mustardcat strut, only because I want to try my own design. I also want another excuse to not have someone in the back seats!
Once everything is sorted I'll try to modify the seats so the fit or I will just make a delete panel.

Your profession explains that wrecked 240! haha
I work all day with mild steel. I don't see issues with it.

My brace has been delayed again, I've decided to buy some new tires! They are just average BFGoodrich G-Force Sports, but the difference between my old Pirelli's and the new ones and these is these actually have tread and are quite a bit smaller. Instead of running on 195/60/15 I'm running on 195/50/15. I realized on my way home I should have gotten wider tires, but it didn't occur to me. I'm just happy that I don't have to worry about my old abused and raced tires exploding. Another nice thing about this is, I got these nearly brand new for 180 bucks mounted.

The infamous stock height is so noticeable now. I'm definitely doing a drop after I get the lips.

Re: JoshuaaXD's Build Thread

My car has always had a slightly rough idle, since I bought the car I've failed to do a complete tuneup, I still need to pick up new wires, but replaced my spark plugs with NGK G-Powers. The old plug were actually worn just fine. I was expecting some kind of catastrophic disaster when I was pulling the plugs. I like these new plugs quite a lot. It's definitely important to never neglect a tuneup haha.

I also have a new thermostat to put in, but I've held that of for tomorrow since it's a little late.
