Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

Here's the story. Bought a 91 4WS Si a few months ago with 45K miles. Carfax backs up the miles, but it had quite a bit of body damage 13+ years ago that was repaired fairly well. Old lady drove it for the last 12 years. It drives flawlessly, no alignment problems, no leaks, etc. Interior is excellent, and the engine purrs. Mechanical and interior are as good as it gets. The exterior wasn't perfect when I bought it, but not bad. Then, a few weeks ago, a big hail storm. Beat up the trunk, hood, roof and cracked the sunroof.

The whole thing is killing me -- seemed such a rare find. Question is now, do I fix it or sell it? If I were a body man, it wouldn't even be a question, but I'm not. Yet, I love the idea of restoring this car to pristine condition like it deserves with such low mileage. Parting with this car would kill me, but I'm not sure I have the time, and not sure I want to spend the money.

Looking for advice/recommendations. Body man called for replacing trunk and hood, fixing roof. Search for cheap replacement parts and go to Maaco? Sell the car to someone who has the passion, skills and time? Part it out (seems crazy)? What's a good price if I sell?

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

Pics would be nice. There's really no way we can value something we haven't seen. But to be honest, you probably won't get much out of it in it's current condition, even with the low mileage. If it's me I'd fix it, no matter how long it takes. Don't do a maaco paint job on it unless you are planning to do all the body work and prep work. Then you can have maaco shoot the paint. But a 3rd gen with only 45k miles deserves to be restored.

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

You could get lucky and find a matching trunk/hood at a junkyard. I recently replaced my sunroof with a newer one I found at a junkyard. Very easy replacement. I'd hold onto the lude, sounds like a good one. :)

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

If you have 2-3K to spend on a body work/paint job I say keep it. You would have to really love your car. If not pass it on to someone else and start new. Pics would help a lot. Good luck in whatever you do.

haha I went to craigslist to try finding a 5th gen with that many miles and it just occurred to me that there are a lot of high mile 5th gens and them being at least 10 years old it just puts me in a state of shock and awe that there are final year preludes with 200k on the clock! My 3rd gen is going to hit 200k soon haha

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

Actually, it is white, but does have some small spots of rust here and there. ;)

I appreciate all the advice. I'm still deciding what I want to do. I have located a matching hood and trunk lid at a salvage yard that I'm going to look at. I'll upload some pics later. If I decide to sell, I'll let all of you know when I've posted it to craigslist or ebay.

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

Go to your local park with a printout of my signature, think it over while watching local ladies jog by , boobies bouncing, and just keep the car. Even have a moment of glaring clarity. When you're done, I have Front fenders, side Skirts, and bumper (I don't know if you like after market) you can have, just pay shipping. NO LIE.

Just to get you started.

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

Update here - hate to leave threads hanging. It's like when you have an awesome dog that you just can't keep and you find a great owner who lives on a farm where the dog can run and be free and be a dog. A few nights ago I decided to pull into the driveway of a home near me that had a number of older cars (including several imports) next to their detached three car garage where they did restorations. I had passed the home numerous times over the last few weeks and thought they may be "the ones." I pulled in, and told them what I had. They were a bit skeptical and apparently had never been interested in Hondas. An hour ago, they showed up to check it out. They (dad, son, girlfriend) took it for a spin and, well, needless to say, came back with wide smiles on their faces. They were believers. That 4WS will do it to you, as I myself have learned.

It killed me to sell it. I wasn't a Prelude enthusiast before I bought the car just a few short months ago. I am now. Unfortunately, I just didn't have the time to give the car what it deserved. But I couldn't just list it on Craig's list or eBay and turn the keys over to someone that would run it into the ground in 6 months and dispose of it in a salvage yard. That's why I pulled into their driveway -- I knew they wouldn't do that.

They pulled my 91 SI 4WS with 45K miles away excited at the rare find, and with the time, ability and appreciation she deserves -- that'll let me sleep better tonight. And now there are three more Prelude enthusiasts in the world now.

Re: Advice - Sell my 91 with 45K miles?

That brought a tear to my eye. You took the time to find a good home for your lude. I feel pretty confident that you'll be back with another one soon enough. Only a true luder would do that for a car they're selling.
