loss of power

Anybody lose power while driving? 91 lude with b20a JDM. At a stop light I noticed the mufflers were getting pretty quiet and when I took off It felt like I lost at least 50 horsepower. Still idles great at 770 rpm's and runs with no pops or skips. Almost feels like something is either stuck in the exhaust which I can't imagine or that some component is freezing up restricting the engine from running.

Re: loss of power

Changed fuel filter and purged the lines with pump running. Still the same. After revving engine it sounded like a loose bearing rattling. Either the water pump or idler pulley I guess but I'm sure that would throw off the timing. Wish me luck.

Re: loss of power

Could be part of the catalytic converter innards have crumbled. Not sure how you'd check that without removing the cat, though.

Re: loss of power

You need to figure out that noise before doing anything else. If you suspect the water pump bearing may be failing, you need to stop driving it now. If the water pump fails it will take out the timing belt and you will end up with bent valves. Then you will really have a loss of power.

As for the loss of power, when's the last time you did a tune-up on her? New plugs, cap and rotor, check the ignition timing. You might even want to replace the plug wires if they are original.

Re: loss of power

Everything is new. Water pump, oil pump, plugs wires. It's a JDM B20A Ran perfect for the last couple months. Now the timing belt tensioner did bind so I ordered the timing kit.The belt that's on it might have 3000 miles on it. If this doesn't do it then I'm gonna take off the cat.

x2 You can simply check by just tapping on the cat. If you hear some rattling. That could be the problem.

Re: loss of power

i would check your cat. just unbolt it and see if it helps. or pull you 02 sensor. you can check a clogged cat by taking a vacuum gauge and connecting it to the intake manifold and holding your throttle open (while running) at about 3000 rpm. if your vacuum drops but then starts to slowly build back up you have a bad cat or a restriction in the exhaust
