Icon12 1989 Si Turbo Setup.

Hey all. Last fall I purchased a 89 si for a steal of a deal. Originally it was going to be a winter car, but I liked it so much that im going to restore it. It has new, no cat exhaust, new ball joints, new alternator .ect
First things first I am kinda confused on the engine markings. The block has "B20A" stamped on it.(Not B20A5) But the engine has a EGR. Baced on what I understand about the JDM engine, it did not have a EGR. Could it have been added to pass emissions?(I dont need to pass any emission standards by the way) Okay well lets get down to business here what im going to start with is, an engine rebuild kit from rock auto.
It comes with:
Engine Kit Gasket Set
Crankshaft Main Bearing
Forged Pistons
Piston Rings
Connecting Rod Bearing
Thrust Washer
For 325$
Second is this turbo kit for the USDM 88-89
485hp Turbo Kit 88-89 B20 A5 Prelude Si USDM HONDA T3 on eBay.ca (item 350399568339 end time 28-May-11 14:35:34 EDT)
Will this kit be compatible with my JDM engine?
Third is my suspension, I am leaning toward bilstein suspension here
Essex Distributors

Is this a good idea for my budget range, any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1989 Si Turbo Setup.

NO. look at the seller's kits. they all generic looking, no pics of it actually sitting in the engine bay. I've seen this guy before and his kits are not prefab.

Quote:
-We are the parts supplier, not mechanic. We can try our best to help with generic questions, but it is best to consult a professional turbocharger installer with specific questions.
-There are no installation instructions included. The install is simple and most customers install it themselves in a weekend. If you cannot figure it out or feel uncomfortable with the installation, please have a professional assist.
-Most of these parts are direct bolt-ons. Some are not.
The piping needs to be fitted up. Because of the bends and couplers included, it should be simple.
-The T3 turbo flange needs to be welded to an adapter pipe or directly to the stock manifold.
-To run this on a street car, the turbocharger down pipe will need to be connected to your existing exhaust. Expect to fabricate an adapter pipe or have an exhaust shop connect them.
Off the Auction itself. Now you're still missing a tuned ECU, no Injectors. No name turbo , electric fan, Inter-cooler $5 Intake filter and NO instructions. The only thing I would buy is the Turbo Manifold, And I would want to see it line up with the Header bolts in a picture.

Our Engine is similar, being a Dohc block from honda, but this link is more for reference. Just score the parts yourself.

-->COMPLETE How-To:: Turbocharge Your Honda // Rep-ing Hypnotik Speed - Honda-Tech

And don't worry, 1funryd has the parts you need to keep the block in check. Cometic Gaskets, mounts, good stuff.

Re: 1989 Si Turbo Setup.

Listen to sideswipe! Just put this into perspective.

Can I afford to put together a turbo kit?
i.e. turbo manifold, turbo, wastegate if not part of turbo, tubing, air filter, obd1 conversion for wire harness, intercooler, bigger injecters, new spark plugs, stronger con rods (h22), better off fuel management, and whatever I may have missed.

Am I doing the work myself or having a shop do it?
Turbo kits are time consuming to put together and make run properly, are you going to do the assembly yourself then limp the car to get tuned on a rolling road? If your having a shop do it can you afford to pay labor and does the shop have experience with engine modifying.

What is your budget range?
1000 bucks will get you some junkyard setup with dsm, home depot, and vatomart parts. A better setup will run you imo around 3k.

Re: 1989 Si Turbo Setup.

Well im definitely willing to spend 3 grand on the engine itself. I would be doing all the work myself.(I never let anyone else touch my vehicles even for tires.) I like the idea of a kit because I wont forget to purchase anything, then be banging my head on the wall for 3 weeks waiting for it to come. I also have a welder so I can make my own welds on the manifold if it would be worth my while.

Is FTMFL a store name or a sellers name?

Re: 1989 Si Turbo Setup.

FTMFL stands for future tuned motors of florida, they are a very well known and trusted supplier of forced induction setups. They work exclusively with Hondas and their more well known products can be found in the majority of nascars in the last eleven years. If you buy what is a seized bearing turbo from them then it is a direct bolt on to ALL honda engines. This does not require any type of cooling upgrade. The FTMFL Seized Bearing Turbo only requires you to keep it topped off with coolant that has been mixed with a motor oil of your choice, if budget doesn't allow you to do so then you can actually just run straight tap water in the turbo. I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but this is the best choice for you if you want to get good results on a budget. This type of turbo was first developed by mazda when they were working on their v8 wankel engine for the first time. It was scrapped because it couldn't seem to handle the transition to vtec when the revs were over 9000rpm. FTMFL however took the old idea and made it work using modern technology. One last bit of info you will definitely need is, you would now need to keep your timing belt lubricated if you run this setup, my suggestion is to take your timing belt cover off and it is recommended to douse it with liberal amounts of DOT3 brake fluid. FTMFL do not give much of an explanation why you have to do that, but trust me after about a two weeks you will have a lot to say about all this information I'm releasing to you.
