clutch issues on my 89 si

hey all, quick question regarding my 89, now bear in mind two things:

this is the first honda, or even CAR ive ever owned. anything else ive owned is either an old school ford diesel or a jeep cherokee (more on the lines of heep...)

and this is the first stick ive ever owned or driven

i got it about a week ago and it is GREAT. the clutch works fine and for never driving a stick it was VERY easy to pick up

but yesterday its started making a very strange and highly annoying/embarrassing, low pitched squealing sound every time i start to engage the clutch to take off from a stop, 1st gear or reverse, everything else is great, it shifts smooth, NO slip at all, no excessive chattering (id expect it to a little as i havent gotten enough practice to perfect driving it).

now the weird part is, is that if i rail on it a bit, or if i drive on the freeway for a bit, it wont do it anymore, until i let it sit for about an hour.

could it be a bearing and my tranny is low on gear oil? ive thought about the throwout bearing, but ive heard youll hear it grinding even in neutral, but theres NO other out of the norm noises this entire car makes other than the one i just described.

any one have an idea? any input would be greatly appreciated, as im starting to worry abit cause i need this car for my job too...

Re: clutch issues on my 89 si

It's tough to say without actually hearing it. It could be the throwout bearing, as they can make a squeal or grinding noise. While they usually make noise when you push the clutch in when they're going bad, I suppose it could also make noise when you release the clutch too. They usually outlast the clutch disk, but it's possible a previous owner didn't replace the bearing if they changed the clutch. How many miles are on the car?

Re: clutch issues on my 89 si

dont judge but nearly 300k

the car runs great. doesnt smoke or anything, i mainly got it because gas is 4 bucks a gallon here, with eventual plans for it to fulfill down the road, including a full h22 swap in a year or two.

it came with a folder that had 5 years of maintenance receipts, one of which is a professionally installed clutch in 09 by a honda dealership.

i know learning to drive stick can take its toll on a clutch, but im not hard on it at all, i dont roast the clutch by revving then giving it clutch, usually i let it start to lug before giving it any gas.

idk, maybe a bearing up top iin the tranny snt getting enough oil when the fluid hasnt warmed up?

im somewhat mechanically inclined, but im no tech by any means.

300k, nice. That's a testament to how good the engineering was on these cars.

I would expect the Honda dealer to have replaced the throwout bearing when the clutch was replaced. But you shouldn't rule it out. I suppose it's safe to assume that you've ruled out a belt slipping as a cause for this? If you can't diagnose it yourself, you might want to have someone with an experienced ear listen to it before you tear it apart too much.

Re: clutch issues on my 89 si

at first i thought of that, but the sounds coming from the transmission side

and i just realized something lol, my car doesnt have the factory guage cluster, so im guessing the 300k might not be... accurate.

im thinking maybe my tranny is low on oil, maybe a synchro or something isnt getting enough oil till ive driven it for a bit and the oil gets warmed up in the tranny? idk. maybe its just clutch slip against the flywheel, cause it usually does it if i accidentally give it gas before clutch when im taking off. maybe the flywheel needs resurfacing? idk if that would cause it but it comes to mind cause everything in the clutch system is sound, maybe its not in the clutch system at all?

Re: clutch issues on my 89 si

It's easy enough to check the fluid level. I would do that before even driving it again if you suspect it to be a problem.
