My engine revs really loud

I have a 1990 honda prelude si with a 2.1 engine. So I replaced the IACV a few days ago and ever since then it revs up to 3000 rpm when its cold and after it heats up it drops down to 2000 which is still alot. Any ideas on what it could be? And how do you mess with the idle speed? could that be it?

Re: My engine revs really loud

Sounds like you have an air leak. Did you use a new gasket?

Re: My engine revs really loud

Not the gasket on the IACV. would that be problem?

Re: My engine revs really loud

It's very likely, especially if the gasket was torn or just plain old.

gaskets never go bad. that's why cars never leak oil. duh.

Re: My engine revs really loud

i forgot why i changed it but it was a used part. then it gave the code for the iacv so i switched it back to the old one and the code went away but it still revs really high. And is there a special tool to check the vaccum lines?

check the idle screw on the front side of the throttle body. screw it in to drop the idle. it should be closer to the top of the throttle body.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to f*ck with that... this isn't a 2 cycle ATV, after all.

Re: My engine revs really loud

its on there so you can f**k with it. i went and worked on one and the only problem was is that screw was screwed all the way out causing a vacuum leak. screwed it in and it ran normal. if you read any manual for your car it will tell you thats on there for you to adjust your idle.

Unless you're using a new IACV, you shouldn't ever have to adjust the idle screw.

Sorry to disagree with you, but the manual states that the idle speed should be inspected once a year, and adjusted if needed.

However, if you're gonna do it, at least follow the correct procedure when adjusting the idle speed...

Re: My engine revs really loud

Ok so I changed all the gaskets, drained the air in the cooling system, checked the vaccum lines for any leaks and adjusted the idle speed. It is still reving up really high. It goes up to 4000 rpm when i turn it on but itll drop down to 1000 once it is heated up. Except itll start reving up when the car moves. Say im at a stop light, itll be at 1000 rpm when i let go of the clutch itll take off normally but when i stop, itll drop to 1000 then itll start reving up to 3000 and itll stay that way for arounf 5 seconds then itll drop back down to 1000. What the f*ck can it be?

Re: My engine revs really loud

did you not try the fast idle valve. open that and tighen down that plastic piece. its in that vid i posted earlier in the thread. thats the only other thing i would think i can even be. With your intake pipe off, put your finger on that hole that is right in the throttle. if the idle goes smooth then its the fast idle which that leads too. just trying to help man. i hate idle problems

Re: My engine revs really loud

check your coolant reserve tank, if you dont have enough coolant you wont get the pressures you need in the cooling system and that can cause it to idle high. that was the case with my 1990 si

Re: My engine revs really loud

You have a bouncy idle. I suspect that you probably didn't bleed the cooling system, which is the #1 cause of this. Bleed the coolant and see if that helps. Click the link below for the procedure if you aren't sure how...
