Indigo gauge cluster install=fail

Well today I got my new clusters in the mail.

YAY!...not

Well everything went smoothly until I actually went to replace the black ones w the white ones.

Going off prelude3g. He says that the Auto ones are not a problem for the Manual tranny gauges swap. Soo I got them off ebay.

To be short and sweet, they didnt work.

To be honest, the fittings were way offffff! and the wiring for the glow at night time...oh gah its a pain in the ass. If you want my opinion. Get the RIGHT ones for man tran. If thats what you have. and dont worry about the wiring for the glowing. Theyll still be white at night due to your stock back light in the dash

before

After

Problem

The real problem I ran into was the temp and gas gauges as you can see.

I managed to get the gas off...but the temp broke

Never the less. I have a pair of auto temp gauges for sale and am In need for a new oem WHOLE cluster...unless whoever is selling wants to take it apart for just the temp....

Yah, getting those gauges on is pretty tedious.

Re: Indigo gauge cluster install=fail

It has been my experience that you should never try to remove the temp or fuel gauge needles. Speedo and tach needles are easy to remove and replace without damaging the gauges. I have yet to read a post on any Prelude forum where someone was successful at removing and installing the temp and fuel needles, and still have working gauges. If you had posted up asking about doing this I would have been happy to convey this information.

Gauge clusters are pretty cheap from the junkyard. Grab one the next time you are there.

I've seen gauge clusters that people have been successful at installing overlays on, but all of them have been the type that don't require you to remove the needles to install them. You kind of have to slip the needle through the hole in the overlay, and manipulate it over the rest of the gauge. Requires a hole that is slightly larger than the needle. I don't know if any of them were electroluminescent though.

Well let me be the first to congratulate you on that.

I wasn't able to do that, and read on other forums where others have tried and failed as well. Some were able to do one gauge or the other, but I never saw that anyone was successful with both gauges (until now that is).

Pics are always nice.

Re: Indigo gauge cluster install=fail

no pics of importance, yet. and sorry i forgot we are in the 3rd gen. its a 5th gen im working on. the needles are the same but i dont know if the internals are or not. basically i was clearing out the needles so they would be a solid blue. the snag i ran into was that you can get 98% of the colour off but a little tiny piece where the needle rests over the base. only way to get it is to take the needle off, then take the needle apart. fun fun

Oh, you did that on a 5th gen. Yeah, I have no idea if the internals are the same or not. My guess is that they are not the same since the are around 10 years separating the two generations.
