My 3rd Gen Testimonial

I read in someone's signature here a quote that was along the lines of "3rd gen Prelude owners are a different kind of enthusiast." and with great pride I salute the person who said that. To tell the truth, when I was shopping around for another car I was looking for rear wheel drive Toyotas. I had my options open though as I also had interest in e30 BMWs, old mercs, Nissan 240s, and even some Porsche 944s. I basically had my eye on the majority of the tuner market made in the 80s and 90s. I'll admit I was once a person who despised all Honda's, only because I like Toyotas better or because I wouldn't want to be a person who drove a "rice rocket". I was ignorant since I had never had much time behind the wheel of a Honda.
Several months ago I was able to take the wheel of two Porsche 944 Turbos, one a late model Silver Rose edition and another built for the track and had over 400hp. I was in love and my friends who owned the cars spend some time toying with a group of Hondas. I was in love and went on a search for one to be my own.
In April of 2011, less than one month ago I offered to buy my friends car for 1500 dollars, he immediately said 1200 dollars and I made the deal and bought the car. It was a 1988 Honda Prelude Si with some 195,000 miles on the clock. I had never driven the car before and had bought it when it was in need of brake work, a timing belt and water pump, and a few new gaskets. I didn't know what I got myself into, I had just bought a 24 year old car that I had believed at the time belonged in line to be crushed.
Within 30 minutes of buying it, I removed every kind of aesthetic enhancement I could find on it from seat covers, to faux carbon fiber accents and the next day after having it I went to a car meet.
As I come into the parking lot where the event was held I hear comments from people talking about the car and I see friends with their Civics and 240s asking about it. I gain confidence in it and begin to appreciate the car for what it is. As I leave the meet I run the car harder than I have done to any car that I've had previously and I quickly fall in love. Little problems the car hard initially didn't bother me and in the first two days of owning it I put on 200 miles. I drove it through every back road I could find and tried to run it to the ground, but the little car soldiered on. One night after dropping a friend off at his house I see steam coming from under my hood and the next day white smoke spewed from my exhaust followed by a high, bouncy idle. My heart was breaking and I felt that my attempts to break it's spirits had succeeded. I only had the car for one week and already I had become attached to it, I had to save it, apart the engine came and I replaced every rubber part I could find and did the work that was needed. I decided the car I originally had no care for deserved to soldier on. When my car was back together, I started her, warmed her up efficiently, and went straight to the Chevron station and filled the tank with premium gasoline. My motor immediately came to life and began begging me to give it more abuse because it could take it. Weeks after my brakes begin to go soft and three days later I lose braking almost completely. I'm again torn and begin to question my car. I had thought that it would treat me well after I had saved it from sitting in my driveway unused. Soon I decided to save it once again and sought off to save the car and allow it to continue roaming the streets. After the brakes were sorted out I was amazed, this car which came into this world before I had and it drove like none other. It is a unique driving experience. It begs you to open it up and welcomes you with power starting at about 3000 rpm and immerses you in a lovely symphony of sound. At slow speeds it gives you a benefit of a tight turning circle and lets you steer with your little finger, but at speed it's steering tightens up and gains plenty of muscle, it invites you with seemingly unlimited amounts of grip, plenty enough for maneuvering on the street. It soaks up bumps and gives you a great feel of what is going on at the front wheels. The stock suspension is plenty firm for handling, but civilized enough to keep you comfortable. It's seats leave me in awe each time I sit in them. The side bolsters are adjustable and this allows it to hug you and keep you to keep firmly in it while cornering, it has an adjustable lumbar support, and it reclines with a coarse and fine adjustment. Cargo space is doubled with the ability to flip down the rear seats and give more room in the trunk.
Like I wrote in my signature, I have driven many different cars in my life from my first car a 1990 Toyota Corolla sedan that likely delivers some 80 tired horses to the wheels to a Mercedes Benz S55 amg which delivers about 500hp. I also own a 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP which has a bit less than 300 hp and I nearly stopped driving it and made my Prelude my daily driver. It's 135hp isn't exactly what I've grown used to in recent years, but I don't think I'll turn back any time soon. I've caught a bug and it has caused me to neglect all of my cars for this little Honda Prelude.

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Thanks, I felt the need to write about it, because today is actually the day I got it back after I sent it off to get the brakes sorted out.
I wouldn't call the lights bright, they are actually stock I used an open shutter, on both of the pictures so they only seem brighter than they really are. Soon they will be that bright though haha.
This is the best car I've ever owned imho.

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Thank you pr0d1gy9, luzer, and again to prelude13! I really love this car, I got out of my house in slippers today to move the Prelude out of the driveway and I instead went on a little joyride since there are some little backroads behind my house. This car is amazing. Its going to take a while to get used to the fact that my brakes work now haha its only been a day since I've had it back.

Lol, I've done that before. We have five vehicles, and I have to shuffle them around a lot because only two can fit in the garage. If I need to move the lude, I'll sometimes take it for a quick spin before parking it out of the way. Once I was in my pajamas and slippers. Good thing I didn't get pulled over because I didn't have my license with me.

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Great read. My prelude is my first car, and whenever I drive any other car I get depressed.

x2 on the shuffling joyrides. I sometimes don't even have to be shuffling cars around in my driveway. I'll simply only be moving my car to park on the street, and I'll go for a joyride.

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

My lude was from the local auction for 500 bucks. The engine was toast so I put a JDM B20A in it and life is great. Takes corners perfectly. Only problem that still haunts me is the main relay here in the hot Summer in Georgia. I'll fix it soon enough. Not the fastest car I own but great to cruise around in . Did I mention it corners great?

I'm confused. A police cruiser is just another car on the road. If he wasn't going the speed limit, you are perfectly within your rights to pass him. I've passed cops a few times. Even if the cop was going the speed limit when you passed him, it wouldn't be enough of an offense to pull your license for 6 months. What are you leaving out?

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Ummm I'm on a provisional license and I got a ticket for speeding and supposedly the space to pass wasn't big enough to safely pass the cruiser. Hes trying to book me for speeding and for traffic violations. I live in Stockton, California the police here are fairly corrupt.

Right now I'm going to be meeting in court in about a week to fight this, its really annoying because I haven't gone anywhere outside of road rules or done anything dangerous or unlawful.

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Alright, so basically what ended up happening I now have to go to traffic school and I'm being fined 200 bucks, not so bad compared to what I likely would have been paying. I fought the original charges which included reckless driving and speeding, the officer was trying to get a fix it ticket on my car too, but my car is stock so he couldn't do shieetttt! I'm somewhat happy with the result, but I still have my license and my prelude is just fine, but and update on it, I put it on non op because I got a parts car in Sacramento, I have to go pick it up sometime and I'm going to see what I can get from it. It's high time to start doing some work to my prelude! haha

Re: My 3rd Gen Testimonial

Good to hear you didn't lose your license. I'm not familiar with what a provisional license is. But from what you've said about what you did, the judge should have thrown the case out if you passed him in a legal passing zone and he was going under the speed limit. What was he trying to give you a fix it ticket for?

A provisional license is what is issued now in California for your first year of being licensed, think of it as a probation period when you get a new job. Basically any type of traffic violations are amplified and I can't be cut as much slack as I would with a normal license.

He tried to give me a fix it ticket because my exhaust is supposedly too loud. I fought that by proving that it is the stock exhaust with all the oem components there and the car is first off 23 years old and there is a hole in it somewhere. It wasn't anywhere near loud enough for me to be ticketed.

Hell my Pontiac has always been louder than my prelude and I have never gotten a second look from an officer in that car.
