vss/speed pulser

I got a 89 si that has issues. The s3 light comes on and engine throws code 17 vss. When this happens the fourth gear revs higher and cruise control doesnt work. I have read about this on newer preludes and got the new\sensor. Seems to me the 88 and 89 dont have any electrical connections only the speedo cable an two power steering hoses at that assembly.

Seems to me the ecu needs an electrical signal which leads me to the speed pulser I found on the car and it's easy to get to. The honda maual confirms there is no electrical sensor on the vss on the 88 model year and a speed pulser by the starter.

Just wondering if anyone has experience on this before I buy another sensor which may or may not fix.Of coarse the local tranny shop says the 4th gear/torque converter going out and wants $1400 to fix it(I'm sure he does). That's more than I paid for the car 2 years ago LOL

Re: vss/speed pulser

On 88/89 ludes the electrical portion of the speed sensor (photo pulser) is in the gauge cluster. The thing that mounts to the transmission (usually referred to ass the vss) is mechanical. If your odometer is working then that part is fine.

Here is a link to the online manual that shows the location of the speed sensor and speed sensor amplifier.

Re: vss/speed pulser

Thanks for the info, might explain why it works sometimes and the speedo usually starts bouncing before the engine light comes on.

Your best bet would be a salvage yard, or you could look on ebay or find someone parting out an 88 or 89 Prelude. Grab the whole gauge cluster. And for the speed sensor it doesn't matter if it's auto or manual tranny, or 4ws. They are all the same. There may be a difference in the S vs Si models though because the carb'd ludes have a different gear ratio, and the speedo gear may be different. So make sure it's from a fuel injected lude.
