My 3g and it's story so far. Need tranny advice!

Hey guys the name is Kevin. I'm new to PZ and need some insight. So here is my lude's story: (my question is at the bottom)

I bought a black 90 lude Si exactly two weeks ago! (for only $1250 hehe). It has about 206k miles now, doesn't eat/burn oil (yet), had an immaculate interior, and other than the paint chips and failing clear coat was in awesome shape for the price I paid.
This is where the story turns. I bought the car on a Friday and it was stolen and gone on Sunday. Just my luck right...? I didn't know at the time how easy it is to break into old Hondas. I had it for two days and didn't even think about anti-theft stuff yet. And no nothing valuable was in the car.
Sorta long story short I recovered my lude just yesterday because I put up an ad on Eugene craigslist (any University of Oregon duck fans out there?) saying my car was gone and some guy frantically called me yesterday saying he just BOUGHT the car (unknowingly from the sketchy thieves) for $400 and sold it to his friend. He's a young mechanic and he flips/scraps cars for a profit. So this guy gets my car back for me and fills me in.
It was obvious the thieves ran the lude really really hard for the ten days or so they had it The front tires are much more worn down, mud and dirt everywhere, and they burnt out the clutch. Good news is is that the unknowing mechanic was fixing up the car before he saw my ad and put in a new clutch but anyway the picture you see is probably typical for a break in. The stereo is obviously gone (it was old anyway) and the steering column/wire connections etc is a mess. CC doesn't work, front lights don't move up and down anymore. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that's been a victim of car theft but I feel like my car has been raped. It sucks.

MY QUESTION:
-Since I've driven it after I got it back the shift from 2nd -> 3rd isn't nearly as smooth. Is it called "grinding" into gear? Because there is sort of a clunk when I shift into 3rd and I totally feel it in the shifter. There is a little whiney sound and if I move the stick slow into 3rd I totally feel a pulsating/resistance into 3rd gear. But once I'm in 3rd and the clutch is out it drives fine. It's just going into 3rd. It's hard to describe but I'm sure someone else out there has experience with this. Does anyone know what this is? Like I said the thieves burnt out the clutch and obviously drove the hell out of it. Time to install some kind of kill switch..
Any advice on the transmission? Please excuse my noobness. Thanks

Is the syncros something that is fixable at a shop?

Hi Kludes,

That's a nice looking 3G. It's a shame somebody messed with it but you're lucky you got it back in mostly one piece, if your car gets stolen around here usually all you get back is a burnt out shell.

As siprelude88 said, the 2nd -> 3rd problem is most likely the syncro, to fix this the box needs to be either pulled from the car, stripped down and rebuilt... not cheap, or replaced with a good box from another car. Changing the gear oil may make a small improvement until you can fix it properly.

The CC and headlight problems are probably caused by them messing with the wiring. Here's a link to an online manual that will help you find the problem. Honda Shop Manuals - 1988 Prelude

Re: My 3g and it's story so far. Need tranny advice!

Thanks guys for the replies. Really appreciate it. I understand how noob I sound!

Alright so looks like it's no easy fix I'll just live with it I guess it's not that big of a deal. I was told by a friend to just double clutch into 3rd and it does help with the smoothness of the shift on upshifts but downshifts from 4th are still rough.

Does this whole syncro issue compromise the integrity of the transmission in the long run? Is it something I can just live with or will this need fixing? By the way I parked the lude in the garage and it was dripping a lot more oil then usual I swear the crooks drove it into the ground. During the first 2 days I had the car before it was stolen I did pull the distributor cap off and there was oil seeping out from the bottom contact of the plastic cap and the metal rotor. Anyone have two cents about that? I get the feeling oil should NOT be there...

dont double clutch its not needed i dont and my tranny has survived for 50,000 miles of this and it wont hurt it for now it will after about mayb 70,000 miles u can live with it and yes u do want to fix it so start saving just dont drive like an ass and it will last awhile the oil should not b there and its probably ur distributor seal on the head

Re: My 3g and it's story so far. Need tranny advice!

Okay ya double clutching when I tried it a few times was just pretty annoying. The syncro isn't bad at lower city rpms but on highway ramps etc I just hate trying the higher rpm shift into 3rd. I try to be as nice to my lude as I can when I drive it.

As far as the oils leaks I'm going to start addressing them soon too. I think possibly the tranny may be leaking too? Not sure yet but Jiffy Lube said it was when I last changed the oil about 2 weeks ago. I want my B21 back in shape! At 206k miles I know I can get a lot more out of it.

Ya I'll definitely baby my engine and keep saving for a possible rebuild in the future. Unfortunately I'm still a student so it's not like I have the $$$ to do engine swaps or major mods yet. Thanks for offering though!

*Learned today that Allstate is going to cut a check for ~$400 (after deductible of course) to get the steering column fixed up, electronic connections together, and new stereo etc etc. With any leftover money I'll definitely stop the oil leaks and give it a tune up.

Re: My 3g and it's story so far. Need tranny advice!

I got a new ignition cylinder and Kenwood stereo today! No more starting the gear with a screwdriver haha XD

I started to notice something a little weird the other day with my clutch and 1st gear. I'll be rolling into a stop sign and downshift to 1st gear as I'm almost nearly at a stop. When I begin to pull the clutch out into gear (not to slow down of course but to get going again) I sometimes feel a shudder as if the gear were engaging right off the floor way before it normally engages. The shudder only lasts a split second but it happens wayy too close to the floor like I said. It's hard to describe but it's not because I'm not giving it enough gas and it doesn't happen every time I engage 1st gear. It's really weird.
