check all your fuses first. thats the easiest check and fix
do you hear your fuel pump priming when you turn the key to the on position? (the click before turning the engine on)

Does this happen only when it's hot outside? like if you parked the car in the sun and your car is steaming inside?

If so, that's the main relay.

Honestly ignition switches either work or don't. If you turn it and you here a click thats most likely working. You should get a buddy and have him sit in the car and turn the key, you need to find the starter sylinoid and put a meter across the two posts with the meter set to amps. If you don't see any numbers on the meter change the sylinoid. Other wise your stuck with either the battery, the starter, or you have a ground cable thats wore or broke. If at all possible you should try to pin out your ecu. You'll need to do a search on how to do that or go to http://www.prelude3g.com. Good luck bud.

When my ignition switch went out it did this. I would turn the key, start the car, and as long as i held the key all the way forward, it would keep started, until I let it back like you normally would, then the car would die, and all the dashlights/digital gas/temp gauges would turn off. For about a week, it would sometimes start up, and sometimes it wouldn't...until it failed completely, so it doesn't neccessarily always work or not work, i guess its just the luck you have with it.

more suggestions

hey man, twokexlv6coupe,
He said in the opening post that the car runs when push started. So I'm thinking it's not the fuel pump or fueling system related. Good idea though.

-steelheart
But the fact that the starter is actually getting a little power, "Making clicking noises", makes me think bad connections. The starter motor on mine was cranking a little slow until I replaced the grounding wires, and cleaned the contacts. (thx prelude13)

As far as the ignition switch. Prolly not related, but I had an old 86 ford escort a while ago. The switch on that was a little off. I could turn it to START and the engine would start normally, but when I let the key go to rest in the ON position the motor just died. Heh, had to drive for a week holding the key just in front of the ON position till I replaced it. The point I'm trying to make is Dietek's. When it comes to the ignition switch, your either gonna make the connection or not.

So before you start tearing down the dashboard. Literally Go through all your relays. One at a time, pull them off, get a wire brush or some high grit sand paper, clean the connectors, Check for brown spots or burn marks on the relays, then put them back in. Replace whats melted. Then, the wires that run to your starter.

My 95 jeep constantly had little electrical problems (good old Mopar products) I went through A LOT of fuses on that thing. Until I finally went through it piece by piece.

Hope this helps.
-Paul

Its either in here or http://www.prelude3g.com that has the write up for checking and replacing your ground wires, which can cause a WHOLE lot of problems just in themselves. From there if you find your starter and work back to the battery its fairly easy as far as the engine bay goes. Inside you should locate your fuse that connects the ignition switch and check any wires coming in contact with that entire circut. Its really a matter of "one end to the other" brother.

On a side note, one way to test your ground wires is to turn your dome light on, leave it for about an hour. If it is dimmed or off, then you have a bad a ground somewhere. Batteries should not drain in an hour, 4 or more maybe but not one.

Well I had the same trouble with my 90 2.05L SI, and I replaced the main relay and it fixed my problem. That thing is rather $$$. Also check your main ground it should be somewhere around the thermostat housing, make sure that isn't loose.
