How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

this is an easier alternate to pulling back your passenger carpet and watching the ECU(which is post #2). GO TO POST 2

1.open your hood and locate a yellow cap on the passenger side corner by the fire wall.

2. pull that thing out away from the fire wall and remove the cap

3. take a paper clip and make a u shape out of it

4. stick the each end of the paper clip into each of the 2 terminals

5. now you get into the car and turn the key on but don't crank it, and you check engine light will flash the code out... long flashes are 10 and short blinks are 1
Example: 4 long flashes and 1 quick blink means you have a code 41 which is oxygen sensor

heres the codes i copied them off of Prelude3g.com

'88-'90 PGM-CARB

Code 1 Oxygen content
Code 2 Vehicle speed pulser
Code 3 MAP sensor, electrical signal
Code 4 Vacuum switch signal
Code 5 MAP sensor, vacuum signal
Code 6 Coolant temperature
Code 7 Clutch switch signal (manual trans.)
Code 7 Shift position signal (auto trans.)
Code 8 Ignition coil signal
Code 9 Intake air temperature
Code 10 Electronic Air Control Valve (EACV)

'88-91' PGMFI OBD 0

Code 0 ECU
Code 1 Oxygen content A
Code 2 Oxygen content B
Code 3 MAP sensor
Code 4 Crank angle sensor
Code 5 MAP sensor
Code 6 Coolant temperature
Code 7 TPS sensor
Code 8 TDC position sensor
Code 9 No.1 cylinder position sensor
Code 10 Intake air temperature sensor
Code 11
Code 12 Exhaust gas recirculation system
Code 13 Atmospheric pressure sensor
Code 14 Electronic idle control
Code 15 Ignition output signal
Code 16 Fuel injector
Code 17 Vehicle speed sensor

'90-'91 PGM-FI

Code 0 ECU
Code 1 Oxygen content A *, Oxygen content **
Code 2 Oxygen Content B
Code 3 MAP sensor
Code 4 Crank angle sensor
Code 5 MAP sensor
Code 6 Coolant temperature
Code 7 Throttle position sensor
Code 8 TDC position sensor
Code 9 No.1 cylinder position sensor
Code 10 Intake air temperature sensor
Code 11
Code 12 Exhaust gas recirculation system
Code 13 Atmospheric pressure sensor
Code 14 Electronic air control
Code 15 Ignition output signal
Code 16 Fuel injector
Code 17 Vehicle speed sensor
Code 41 ** Oxygen sensor heater
Code 43 ** Fuel supply system

* 2.0 liter engines
** 2.1 liter engines

Sorry the engine bay is soo dirty but one of the tubes on that chikara header is completely broken in half, so the IM and everything is black due to all the carbon from the exhaust.

I'm looking at the led on the ECU, and I'm getting 14 short flashes.....is this possible?

If the code is 14, shouldn't I get one long flash and 4 short ones?

I've got an 1989 2Si.......

yeah, that's right.
One long flash and 4 short ones = 14.

...even though you've probably checked it a trillion times, i guess, check it again?

Well I also saw this in the service manual here:
http://media.honda.co.uk/car/owner/m...f100/6-176.pdf

It says "self diagnosis LED light blinks 14 times" nothing here about short or long flashes.....so maybe this is a code 14 for the EACV ?

sunnygator

Again, I'm getting 14 even short flashes.......

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

I have an 88 Honda Prelude and I took the plug off, made a U shaped paper clip, stuck each end in and couldnt get the engine sign to flash at all. Do you have to stick it in there really deep?

maybe try leaving the paper clip in there and drive around with it, you want to make sure that it makes contact with those two wires, but you shouldn't have to put it too far in...

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

My check engine light is intermittent. It will pop on after several miles, but when i turn the car off then back on, the light is off. I am new to preludes, and can't find exactly where the ecu is on the passenger side, nor do I see any flashing light under there.

So my 2 questions:

1. Where exactly is the ecu and this light? Pictures helpful..
2. Would this work if i were to leave the car running while the light is on, then put in the paper clip? Or would it hurt anything/work if i were to put the paper clip in then drive around?

Thanks.

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

This is not completely accurate for all Prelude. It is accurate for the OBD1 preludes. The OBD0 ludes actually do not use long blinks. Instead, 14 flashes = code 14.

Also, the PGM-CARB ludes do not have a jumper. At least none of the PGM-CARBS I have ever seen. You will need to pull the carpet flap and look to see the codes.

My question is how can the ECU throw a 0 code? lol
And 1990si, i don't think there is a 11 code, thats why it was left blank.
You might be getting a code 1 and a code 10.

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

I have a 91 Si with the B21A1. The anti-lock light comes on after about 2-3 minutes after the engine is on, and the check engine light only comes on after about 5-10 seconds of me allowing the engine to decellerate while in gear (getting off an exit ramp and not quite has harsh as full on engine breaking). Can I check the CEL codes right after driving with the car still on? I think I need a speed sensor becuse the speedo doesn't work half the time. How do I check the anti-lock light and see whats wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

I have an '89 Prelude S SOHC and sometimes my engine light comes on when running along the highway, other times it doesn't. I checked the light on the passenger side under the carpet and it blinks 4 times. What is a code 4 on these? I'm assuming (if I'm reading this post right) that it's a vacuum switch signal? What the hell is that and how do you fix it?

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

My check engine light has come on a few times lately while i'm driving, but when I shut it off and restart the car, it stays off for a while. A couple of weeks ago when I was in town it came on and when I got on the hwy i did a shut off and clutch start and it went off and stayed off the rest of the trip and for the next couple of weeks. Then the other day it started again. I have not tried to read the codes yet, but it is only after I am driving for a bit. Any ideas what it is?

Are you wanting to start a contest to see who can guess or something? LOL Just go out and check the codes. It literally takes less than 5 minutes to do. The cel doesn't have to be on for you to check them because the ecu stores the trouble codes until you reset them by either pulling the clock fuse or disconnecting the battery.

Re: How to check 'Check Engine Light' codes on a 3rd Gen

I've got a '90 Prelude 2.1 Si with a B21A1 engine (no ABS or 4WS). The long vs. short refers to the duration of the pulse, not the delay between pulses, right? If so, I'm getting an engine error code of 44: four long pulses, then three short ones, then a long delay, then a fourth short pulse, then another delay before it starts over. Is this really a 44 (which isn't in your code list), or might it be a 43?

Three months ago I had an error code that I think did look like an actual 43, along with some hesitation in the engine, which my mechanic said was an O2 sensor problem, so he replaced the O2 sensor (with a Denso) and did some other work (with the hoses, IIRC), and the light stopped coming on and the hesitation went away. [The O2 sensor I had in there was only about 9 months old, having been previously replaced by another mechanic, to pass emissions.] But based on your list, I'm wondering if my real problem was with the fuel system (i.e., his book may have said 41/43 = oxygen sensor). Starting a few weeks ago, however, the check engine light started coming on again, after about 10 minutes of driving -- but, unlike in the previous case, the engine is now running great.

I've got a month trip I'm leaving for in a few days (6 hours driving there, 6 hours back, with short commutes while I'm there), and I'm wondering if I need to squeeze in seeing him again before I leave.
