Alternator 1990 Prelude, How to remove

How do you remove an alternator on a 1990 Prelude Si? I have changed several alternators on Honda civics and accords, but I am having difficulty removing this one from the prelude. I have already removed the power steering pump, disonnected the wiring harnesses, lossened the tension aduster, and removed the top bolt from the alternator. My problem is the bottom screw or nut. I cannot find it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have found the bolt that is holding it in at the bottom, but my problem is that it is not the typical bolt that is holding it in. Instead of a bolt that is similar to the top bolt holding the alt. in, this bolt does not have a nut at the end of it to put a wrench on. It looks very similar to a nail punch.

The Honda alternator bolts have a Hex head to put a wrench or socket on them. If I recall correctly its a size 12mm.

Grandmaster and 1funryd, I am assuming that I will need a 12mm hex wrench to get it off. I have never had to use one of these before. Can I get one at any auto parts or a Home Depot?

Re: Alternator 1990 Prelude, How to remove

mine was a hex 10mm...however i have an 88...i just had to change mine about a week ago...and on mine there is a compressor hose bolted right next to the lower bolt...so you can't fit a socket wrench in there...and from the front you cant use open wrenches cause the actual compresser hose makes for no room to move the wrench...

Re: Alternator 1990 Prelude, How to remove

i actually got my alt out with removing the powersteering pump. if you look right at your exhaust manifold then look over to the right alittle, you will see the bolt. Its really skinny and long looking.

Finally got it out with a 10mm wrench. What a pain! Put the new one in and it is running like a champ again. Thanks for the help Grandmaster.

Re: Alternator 1990 Prelude, How to remove

A good in vestment would be to get some ratcheting 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15mm wrenches from your nearest HarborFrieght tools.

It makes this job so much easier, trust me.

yes ratchet wrenches make the jobs much easier but there is really no need for the 8,9,11, and 13mm on a honda... 85% of the stuff can be done with just 10,12, and 14mm
