Turbos??

Hey all, I'm new here, own a Silver 3rd Gen Prelude.

I was wondering if I put a turbo on it if it would just tear up my engine?? I've heard a lot of mixed responses from people who think it'll just ruin my engine quicker and people who think it'll be fine. I have the B20A5, its got just over 207000 KM on it,
Thanks for any help
Tom.

What does that translate into miles? You could run lower boost and probably be ok. I wouldn't bump it up to 8 psi or anything.

I'd keep it around 5 for daily driving and bump to 7 maybe for racing/spirited. 128K isn't bad. I have 122K miles on my 4th gen H23.

Ok awsome
so they only thing Ive got to due is find a turbo, and convert watever it is to OBD1

Now I have no clue how to do that, but my dad owns a Honda dealership, so im guessing I could just talk to one of the mechanics there (I know them all) and ask them to convert it, think theyd know how to??

Just get a harness... I'm not sure that you would even have to swap, I'll let someone else answer that. YOu're what, OBD0?

This is a OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness, just so you know at least what it looks like.

Yea you do need to convert it to OBD1.

Thanks for the pic SI Speed, judging by it, is it just a simple unplug old one plug new one in?? Or is there a lot more involved with it.

I was wondering when you'd chip in TEL. I always thought there wasn't much difference from OBD0 to OBD1

yea, thats basically it. but if you want to turbo ur motor and stuff, I would suggest that one of your mechanics know how to tune?? because you have to rechip your ecu wit chrome or uberdata or somthen and tune the fuel and air fuel ratio. but if you dont wanna do all that trouble (but i would really RECOMMAND IT)you could just buy fuel managment unit and just get a like a dsm 450s fuel injectors.

If its recommended I'll definately get it tuned, sounds like it would be better for it.

Give me 10 minutes and I'll get pics, but its gonna be filthy and snowed on Damn winter.

If you have a b21a1, scratch your idea about TURBO unless you are willing to eliminate the FRM(as explained before).

The engine stamp is located just right of the exhaust manifold, where the engine block meets the transmission housing...
LOOK DOWN and you'll see it.
If it's covered in crap, you can miss it; but judging from your engine bay pic, im sure you will find it ASAP.

Nah, your pride is ok.

...b21a1 has more power than the b20a5/JDM b20a.

Matched with the awesome d2a4(tranny), you're good.
...just remember to check your oil dipstick from time to time

haha yea I check it every 2 weeks, not burning alot right now actually, but my cousins B21A1 was just shot, used soo much oil he finally went to the B20A5.

So I'm going to have to eliminate the FRM... no clue what that means time to research

Okay, here it is in a nutshell:

FRM is Fiber ReinforcedMaterial.
The clyinder walls are made of this material. Say, for arguements sake, carbon fiber material for ease of understanding.
Now, why did Honda do this to the b21a1?
Mind you, the b21a1 was only available in North American in Si and SR(Canada) trim levels, 90-91.

Before the launch of the NSX, the 3g Prelude was a heavy influence(LOOK AT THE NSX's rear taillights! same as the 90-91 at night!).
A lot of people will even say, the 3g Prelude is the "baby-NSX" because of the curious lines on the car resembling a Ferrari. I love the 80's. :smirk:
Anyway, FRM is in the b21a1. Sort of a, "testing" motor for the NSX v6 DOHC, which also, subsequently has FRM.

I burn a lot of oil now, im at 180,000 miles.
I have a choice of rebuilding the motor myself, a basic re-ringing will/should cease the blowby and oil burning.
OR~live with my oil burning problem and swap in a h22 in the summer of 07. I'm getting the mounts soon... oh happy day!
I whore Turbo when i can VTAK ALL DAY!

See, 2/3's of people who rebuild the b21a1 notice that the cylinder walls STILL have the factory crosshatching clearly visable.
This FRM material is soooo strong, it will eat piston rings within time and age.
DONT let FRM make you think b21a1 is a bad motor.
We are the bastard "B" series because we came from F1 technology. Again, as i said before...
The H23, h22 also has FRM clyinder walls.
In fact, h23's burn oil with age as well.
I've seen too many spaceship, err...h23's that puff out blue smoke.

For a good place of reference, check out this site:

Alright yea I got that.
So basically if I put a Turbo on my B21A1, its gonna just cause a lot of blowby isnt it?

Your b21a1 will die a oil burning, piston ring-tearing, cylinder wall, death.
