Icon9 temperature gauge

Need a little help. Just recently purchased 1986 honda prelude si and noticed that the tem gauge is not coming up to operating temp. car is not running hot. This car had been sitting a few years in the garage and also the speedometer is jumping and not giving me correct speed. The tranny seems like it takes a little while to wind out before shifting properly (Automatic) Help me if you can Thank you

Re: temperature gauge

Temp gauge -- is the coolant coming up to operating temperature, or is it just the gauge? If the former, start with the thermostat...it might be running open all the time. If the latter, swap out the temperature sensor and see if that helps. Could be something else, but those are the starting points.

Speedo jumping -- generally a symptom of a dying cable.

Tranny -- could be any number of things, including normal operation. It's a 3-speed transmission attached to a 100-110 hp engine -- if you're leaning on the gas, it'll hold in gear for awhile before shifting.

Re: temperature gauge

Its a 4 speed w/ overdrive, and you can adjust the shift points w/ the TV cable. It comes from the throttlebody and goes straight to the trans. Tightening the cable @ the trans will make it shift later.... Loosening will make it shift sooner. When it is adjusted properly it should move in sync with the throttle cable.
