86 for sale, 58k miles how much?

Selling my mom's 2nd gen prelude.
58k miles, stored inside.
Bumper is different color than car, but ust an age thing as the plastic aged different than the paint. Car is all orginal down to the stereo (should be replaced). AC does not work, mouse nest likely in airbox. Moth ball smell is almost gone.
Recent work by dealer, new tires. Great mech shape, interior great.
Dad wants $5k. Let me know what you all think.
Thanks

Beautiful car man!

May get 5 grand eventually... but unless you can prove president Reagan drove it or it won a 24hr Lemans race driven by Mario Andretti, 5 grand is about twice what it would go for where I live...

Re: 86 for sale, 58k miles how much?

I'm not surprised. That's what I was thinking. I had a bunch of 2ish offers.
It would be a good deal at that price, as it is a runner, but long term ownership will likely involve misc repairs due to age, not mileage.
Anybody else have an opinion?
What mech issues should I look for, or be preemptive about?
Eric

Re: 86 for sale, 58k miles how much?

if it has just been sitting, you should trash all that old gas, and put some fresh in, with some additive bought from the store. it looks great, and its officially a classic, so hold firm on what you want, if i had the money id buy it off you for around $4000-$5000
take it out to honda meets, not too far, and not too often to keep mileage at that low ammount, and advertise it.

give it a really good detail, clean the engine bay, etc. and then take it to honda meets. remember, people going to honda meets are enthusiasts, someones bound to fall in love with it, especially in the condition its in, and buy it.

as far as mechanical issues goes, check the entire suspension, check condition of the boots, move parts around to check for noises.

also, it would be a good idea to just run some normal maintanance to get it ready for sale, and make it look alot more appealing.
spark plugs
spark plug wire set
air filter
fuel filter
cap and rotor
etc.
you dont have to let them know this in the ad, but let them know after they are done looking at the car, or let them know in the ad, up to you. but it will make a change in the performance of the car, and will make it all the more appealing to a possible buyer.

good luck with the sale, let us know what happens

Re: 86 for sale, 58k miles how much?

I'm with you 95. I'd buy it in a second, but it would set in my driveway. No freakin' way I'd do that to that car.

Anybody who knows cars and is willing to pay top $ has probably figured on doing a restoration and is likely aware that most of the rubber and a bunch of other stuff will need replacing.

I'd say they too would have intentions of putting very few miles on it and would pamper it. Put an ad in Vegas, L.A., N.Y. and other places big money people buy stuff.
I work with a guy who restores cars we'd think were awesome as is. Old American muscle cars. Once he drove from va to wisconsan for an engine block in an old log puller because there were only a few known to be still running.
The right buyer will pay to ship it home.
