Icon5 How much should I sell her for? 85 Prelude 2.0 SI

Hello,
I bought an 85 Prelude 2.0 SI about 3 years ago from my coworker. I love it but I have to move on. It runs and drives great however the paint on it is awful. There are a few rust holes here and there but no dents or accident damage of any kind. The interior is in great shape given that its a 25+ year old car. There's only one tear on the drivers seat.

I recently replaced the rear rotors, pads and wheel bearings.

It does need tires and the AC doesn't blow cold. Also the speedometer never worked so the milage has been stuck at 136,xxx. Florida and Georgia are milage exempt so I never bothered to fix it. Other than that the car is completely stock.

I'm not too familiar with Honda Preludes, I just got in and drove this one so
what do you think the value of this is?

Are these rare? Should I junk it? Hang on to it for my unborn children?

Thanks for your time

Keep it. Don't junk it.

Maybe you could take it to a good detail shop and see what they can do to restore the finish. Money well spent if you sell it.

Yeah I probably won't junk it. I hate the thought of junking any car.

I would probably need a whole new paint job and as anal as I can be with my projects I would want it done the right way and have it taken all the way to metal, have the holes welded shut (very little bondo) and then sprayed the factory color... which might cost more than the car is worth...

yeah it probably cost a good bit but these cars aren't for making money you fix em up cuz you love them. if you see yourself taking the time and investing in research and sweat you can have a really cool fun toy and like you said something to pass on that's one way to look at it. you not gonna build a killer show car but you could tinker with it and have something to stand back and be proud of. just my .02

Re: How much should I sell her for? 85 Prelude 2.0 SI

Agreed loco. I just figured op was gonna sell it so sprucing up the paint would add to the curb appeal and therefore he could get the car sold faster for more $.

Yeag grg, a top flight paint job would cost more than a second gen prelude is worth.
Unless it's been documented to have been driven at Laguna Seca by Ayrton Senna for shooting a Honda commercial etc, a paint job would not yield a positive $ return.
But it's a fun car to own and drive, and now it's a classic.

Re: How much should I sell her for? 85 Prelude 2.0 SI

its an antique now. fix it up real nice, give it a fresh paint job, keep it well maintained, and hang on to it.

however if you were going to get rid of it, the value is there because of the fact its an antique. but i doubt anyone is going to pay more than $1000 on craigslist or ebay....

I see a few second gens on craigslist around me from time to time, and ive never seen one listed over $1000... no accidents, no dents, etc. i saw one the other day that still had pretty good color, like it sat in garages for half its life, and other half was weather beaten. i was gonna pick it up, but the guy had sold it already for $650, it was listed for $800.

no direct answer, but hope this helps.

Unfortunately, although it's now an antique (or is it vintage...I always mix those up), it's not a collector car. That simply translates to "old used car" for most people.

Thanks for all your input guys. It's staying here for now. I did have it listed on CL when I first got my other daily and I got a few bites when I had it a little lower than $1000. When I sell it in the future I'd rather sell it to a teen for their first car or to someone who's had one before. I know money is money but older cars like this I prefer to see go into the hands of someone who's going to take care of it; not just drive it around until the wheels fall off. Know what I mean?

I admire your intention, but it's kind of contradictory IMO. I wouldn't consider a first car something that's well taken care of in most cases. Sure, there are exceptions, but I've seen too many first cars either smashed up or broken down in their parent's driveway. Most 16 year olds lack the knowledge and money to properly take care of a car.

It's good that you're keeping it. Because 2nd gens aren't worth much unless they are in pristine condition. And even then, you'd be lucky to get much more than $2000 for it unless it's special for some reason (reference to bykfixer's post about Ayrton Senna). These cars usually have a lot more sentimental value than practical value. Keep it, fix it, enjoy it.
