Engine swap

I have a 83 prelude, and I am starting to look for engines for it. Mine has seen better days, and it is showing it's age by leaking all over the place. What engines are able to be put in the '83 that will give me more power? I have been looking all over, but I have been unable to find out an answer to this as of yet.

Re: Engine swap

how much are you looking to spend on your lude? 2nd gens dont have a whole lot available to them in terms of aftermarket. new engines don't just bolt right in unless it is the same engine.

Re: Engine swap

you basically have the choice either stick with A series, or try hard to find a jdm 3rd gen accord b series/jdm 2nd gen prelude b series(not to be confused with 3rd gen prelude b20). but honestly you can get some decent hp out of a A18/20. if your running the dual side draft cv carbs, you can get some carbs off a kawasaki bike and run them if you get/make your own intake.

Re: Engine swap

The gold standard is a JDM B20 from a 2d gen JDM Si. Unfortunately, they're rare, and if you say "B20" to most people in the U.S., they'll default to an Integra or a 3d gen Prelude engine, both of which are entirely different.

The easist is to transplant an A20A from either the 2d gen Prelude Si or similar vintage Accord, which bumps the power up to about 110 hp. You'd have to transplant the whole fuel injection system, though, plus the ECU and wiring harness.

If you're willing to custom-build things, the sky's the limit. I knew a guy in Maryland who transplanted an H22A into an 85 base model -- a bit nose-heavy, but it was quick in a straight line. Didn't fit easily, though. You could do like suggested and play with the intake and carb setup. The twin-sidedraft setup on your car is similar to what Honda developed for bikes. A pair of Mikunis on a reworked manifold would sound nice. :)

Re: Engine swap

I am looking to spend about $2,000 on getting the engine done. I don't really want to have to make too many mods for it, but that is up in the air a bit still.
