Re: Need help with replacing clutch.. :/

(getting the obvious outta the way first) you gotta take out the long bolt connecting the strut fork to the LCA. you took the nut off, but you gotta take the entire bolt out.

than, if the BJ isn't simply popping off the LCA (which has NEVER happened for me), you gotta go rent/buy a BJ separater from advanced auto/autozone/etc, which is simply a fork that goes around the BJ, and you hammer the end of it to disconnect the BJ from the LCA. but this type has potential of damaging the BJ boot, but yours already looks torn so you don't gotta worry there
there's also a diff type of BJ separater (but i've never used this type) which clamps onto the LCA, and you screw it up to push the bottom of the BJ up to dislodge it.

Re: Need help with replacing clutch.. :/

ok i see thanks for the info :D also how much would a new set of ball joints run..? just want to tally up the total costs. :P for now its the clutch, ball joints, and well the axel sounds and works well but it looks pretty bad...? so im not so sure there i don't think it's necessary to replace it anyways how much would it add up to this is the first time I've done this kind of thing :D oh and i heard i can rent the bj joint separator..? for like $100 at auto zone but I'm not so sure if that's true sorry for so many questions btw.. :D

Re: Need help with replacing clutch.. :/

BJ's are only like $10 each on rockauto. (they're a lil more expensive if you go to a classier place like AC, LA, Chicago, etc )

I'm positive autozone has a rental program for BJ seperators, it'll just depend on if your local store actually has the seperator in stock or if its at a diff store. The rental program is basically you buy it at first, than return it when your done with it. I've never returned mine and just keep them

and as long as all the axle boots are in good condition (not torn), they're still good (granted their not making any clicking noises)

You only need 2 LOWER balljoints, not uppers. If the boot is torn, you need to replace the entire BJ.

Re: need help with replacing clutch..

You need a ball joint separator. You only need to separate the lower ball joint remove the axle from the hub and swing the hub out of the way. I hope you already broke the axle nuts loose while the car was on the ground..

Re: need help with replacing clutch..

Not to mention the obvious but it looks like this would be a good time to replace those ball joints. The seal is broken and they are leaking.

What schmitty said is correct, get ball joint separator.

Re: need help with replacing clutch..

haha yea i suppose 10k per year is pretty good and well most of the mileage is from trips to Vegas from what I;ve heard its been up there several times a 700mile trip from where i live, im debating whether to run the engine till it dies then rebuild it or swap it with an f22/h22 but not so sure since the frame would need plenty of modding what should i do..?:

Re: Need help with replacing clutch.. :/

Speaking from experience, its muchhhhh easier to simply replace the entire axle, rather than rebooting the old ones. Plus you can get a core charge for the old axles, so they only come out to ~40-50 per axle.

Re: need help with replacing clutch..

A core charge is where the store will give you money back for your old parts (cores)

Not sure which engine/tranny combo you have, but Rockauto actually has entire axles for $30 each for 87 'ludes, which is pretty damn awesome.

wow that is pretty damn Awesome! and i see what that is now well i think ill hang onto the Axles for a couple thousand more mile then since im running low on cash either way haha i prefer Auto zone however since they offer Lifetime Warranty on parts such as the Clutch but to be honest I've never heard of rock auto but i just checked out their site and man do they have good prices but to many brands to choose from im clueless as to which ones are the best :/
