Brake and gear issues

I think that I might have a collapsed brake hose. I was driving the other day in my 1983 Prelude and all of a sudden I noticed that the car was slowing down rapidly when I shifted to neutral. When I got home my brakes were smoking and after some research the most common solution was replacing the hose. Is there any other insight on this problem? Also what size of brake line is it and what fittings?

Secondly I bought this vehicle and it does not shift into 5th gear. I can shift it where 5th is, but it doesn' go into gear. What issue would I be looking at with this? Every other gear works great, but I do suspect a little slippage in each when the rpm's get up to about 3000. Any help with either question would be appreciated.

What led you to brake lines? I'd suspect a stuck caliper first -- should just require a simple caliper rebuild. Which wheel is hot?

It was my front driver side that was hot, and not the passenger side. I am going to replace both the caliper and the brake hose because I want to be sure that I get it fixed and they aren't that bad.

Re: Brake and gear issues

Replacing both isn't a bad idea...if nothing else, it would be preventative maintenance for whichever one wasn't causing the smoking brake. But I agree with Jamie, sounds more like a stuck caliper. A collapsed hose will usually release the individual brake after a bit due to a slow pressure release instead of the usual quick release from foot off the brake. As far as the 5th gear issue goes, sounds like 2 things at once...1st your 5th gear synchros are toast so a rebuild/trans swap is in order...2nd the slippage in each gear is most likely the clutch going...

Re: Brake and gear issues

I ended up with the new calipers and new brake lines and now the brakes are wonderful so the next part of my journey is getting my gears all taken care of. I plan on replacing all of that hardware as well so that I can use the car on the freeway. Something about driving at 5k RPM's doesn't appeal to me. Thank you for the responses.
