Can anyone help me with a clutch/shifting problem on my sons 84 prelude?

Hi. I recently bought a 84 prelude for my teenage son. The biggest problem it has is that the clutch doesn't engage enough to shift when I press the pedal in. I have repeatedly adjusted the clutch cable and it will seem to engage the clutch OK for a while but after a few drives it gradually go back to not working. The cable visually appears to be OK with the exception that I noticed the cable has worn a groove into the metal barrel on the transmission end of the casing. I thoght that the nylon adjustment nut was stripped out and allowing the adjustment to slip but now it seems like It isnt because Im running out of threads on the adjustment barrel. My son claims that it will get better when the engine is cool but I really wouldnt swear to that. It hadn't been started for some time when I got in it a little bit ago and I had to lower the adjustment nut again to get it to shift. I would really appreciate anyone that could offer some advice...

honestly your best bet is to take it to an experience mechanic. something like this is nearly impossible to diagnose without more knowledge of the vehicle. from what i hear the release bearing in the clutch is going out. but who knows.

whatever the case good luck

Thanks. At this point I have a new Clutch cable ordered and I'm going to try installing it. My theory is that the cable itself is stretching inside the casing. You may be write and I might have to take it to someone ultimately but I was hoping someone might have experienced the problem before and could pin point a diagnosis.

well I figured out my problem. I was going to replace the clutch cable with the new one that arrived today and when I finally got my head under the dash after removing the drivers seat and was just looking to see how the clutch cable attached to the pedal I noticed some play in the bracket that holds the petal. After a close inspection I discovered at least one stress crack in the clutch petal /firewall bracket. Apparently the bracket just fatigued and cracked over the years of use and was now bending and flexing when the petal was depressed instead of pulling the throwout bearing lever sufficiently. Next I will remove the bracket from under the dash to repair or replace but I expect that to be a job. The brake and gas pedal are all attached to the same bracket which is above the steering column. Yuk. I wish it just needed the cable I bought. Anyone with any helpful advice on tackling the job or does someone have a used clutch/brake/gas pedal bracket for a second generation prelude 4 sale?
