Icon2 Wierd overheating symptoms

OK - don't want to seem like a newby but this one's got me by the...

'86 A20 2.0 SI:
Can idle for an hour + & runs up to normal temp & fan cycles, no problem.
Drive in town (45 mph or so) - no problem
Drive at 70 mph & at 8-10 miles, temp gauge rises to 1/3.
15-miles & she's at 1/2 way, 20-miles & probably at 5/8 hot on gauge.
This is with morning temps around 55-60 degrees (F)

(slow down to 50mph & it cools to approx 1/2 way up gauge)

Heater will blow warm for a minute or two then only cold air even when motor
temp is hot.

When outside temps are 75-80 degrees in the afternoon - gauge runs much higher & will get almost to pegged at "H".

I've changed t-stat, cleaned rad, new water pump, burped it
& changed it's diaper... but she still runs hot.

Thoughts ???
