head gasket? egr? weird symptoms...

Hello all, thanks for the forum. I have a 1987 prelude 2.0 si, bought few months back, ~140k miles on it. Fun car however, recently having some issues. I will check compression but until then just wanted to pick some brains....lately, usually when cold, but not always, sometimes after a 50mile trip, the car will smoke a lot of white smoke and run a little rough, at all engine speeds. I can sometimes make it quit with a full throttle run followed by a long coast downhill with throttle closed. It has also run out of water 2x in 4 days of 100miles per day travel. No water in the oil. I suspect a head gasket leak into an intake but why is it intermittent. Today during a 60 mile trip it only did it for the first mile or two...No external water leakage. Oil consumption seems high but I have no history to go on....Also, is the PGM-I light, or whatever it is, supposed to light up on ignition start as a test? Cruise is inactive also...any ideas on these? Thanks again, Steve

compression test will tell you if your piston rings are in need of replacement.
a leak down test will let you know if there is a breach in the head gasket or head.

I would have both tests performed due to the high mileage on your car. It's a good starting point for getting your car back up to par.

Well, still not had time to check compression but after ~ 500miles since original post, no water use or oil contamination. What is the small vacuum regulator looking gadget on the front of the engine, driver's side of valve cover with a regulating screw/adjustment on the bottom of it? Where should this be set or what does it control, how is it set, etc? Thanks, still looking and driving. steve

update, checked compression..~180# every cylinder with no washing of spark plugs...probably 1000 miles since original post. Only a couple of smoking incidents since original post with short term of a minute of smoking and stumbling of rpm. Do smell water occsionally, or glycol to be exact and have added ~1gal over same time period. Does anyone know how to adjust the Fast Idle Controller? Also, when you open the gas cap after stopping car to fill up, what pressure should there be in the tank? Positive, negative, or atmospheric? Thanks, Steve

Re: head gasket? egr? weird symptoms...

UPDATE! Gave in to blown head gasket theory after about 100mi of smoking...and I have a SS header to place on the head anyway. After head removal saw clear indications of water intake into the #2 cylinder. Questions for consideration by my learned audience: What is the best head gasket available for the 2.0 si? Is a Fel-Pro good? Beck Arney? Is it necessary to replace head bolts? The car has 140k miles showing with some speedometer issues at time of purchase, now corrected. ...so mileage could be whatever greater than 140k but I don't think 150k....anyway. Not planning on valve work with the recent 180# cyl. pressure test. Just milling the had flat again. Ideas? Thanks, Steve
