Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

I was driving down a road by my house and somehow accidentally shifted into neutral when I was accelerating and the engine revved up to about 8000, the PGM-FI light came on for a split second but went off almost immediately after I let go of the gas.

I got home and everything seems normal, I drove around the block and there didn't appear to be anything wrong, should I be concerned, could I have broken anything?

cant really tell for sure.. eventually u might. it can take days or months depending on how hard u beat on it. dnt mean to freak u out but here's an example: the kid i bought mine from, over revved it and shot the piston rings in one of my cyl. and its been misfiring ever since. u dnt want that, expensive to fix.

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

If I remember correctly the ecu on your car will not let you rev over 7k rpms.
Your tack may have just over shot its mark because when that PGM-FI light went on a Honda reputation saver in the ECU kicked in and cut your fuel to prevent an over rev condition. The only way you can rev to 8k on that car is if you for example were going around 70mph and somehow managed to down shift to 2nd.

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

unless you did something stupid like put a "chip" in it that changes your redline to like 10k youre fine. rev limiter is at 7400 and fuel cutoff is at 7600. the gauges arent the most accurate in the world

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

rev limiter?? mine stops at 8000 rpm, and that makes me angry!! i try to hit 8k as much as possible, no point in having vtec if ur gonna drive like a little girl. over revving isnt a problem as long as the engine is in good condition and there is adequate oil in the engine.

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

nah, i rev mine way up all the time, ive hit 8100-8200 a few times and 8500 once. you cant kill it. i reved the old motor to past 8000 while spraying and it didnt hurt it. but, you can barely over rev one once and then it will seem fine for a few days and then it will start knocking. ive had that happen before. if it dont knock in a week after the over-rev its fine.

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

well its impossible to rev till 8k with stock ecu

if the car seems fine its fine (in my mind) the only damage I would think is weakend components like bearings and rod bolts

Re: Accidently over revved, should I be worried?

I wouldnt worry about it man. I have an 87 SI and its a race car. A typical main event is 35 laps and I bounce the rev limiter 3-4 times every straight away. No problems. Of course the motor has been recently rebuilt and is serviced between every race weekend.
