Custom Intake

Has anyone made their own intakes?

I want to make one for my '87 1.8L by using the rubber hose that goes from the stock housing to the right headlight and attaching a PVC pipe to it and a high flow filter on that. And maybe keep the rest of the rubber tube to direct some air into the engine compartment

What I don't know is whether or not I will need to build a box for he filter. Do I need to build one? What does the box do?

Will this even work?? And don't suggest buying one, Im 18, cheap, going to school and I'd rather make my own.

BTW 1st post :)

X2!

but if your bent on making your own intake, go for it man. i applaud anyone willing to make there own parts. if it were me doing it, i;d find a metal shop and by couple 2.5" or 3" mandrel bent pipe sections and weld them together to fit just right.

Re: Custom Intake

I was thinking and would PVC pipe melt from the heat in the engine bay? And would something like a ceramic paint help keep the heat out of the pipe?

also would just replacing the stock filter with a high flow K&N one give better or equal results?

edit: is this legal?? And should I post this over in the DIY section?
