87 Prelude 2.0Si 98,0XXorignal miles should I?

Hey guys, this is the first time I post but have been larking this forum for quite some time now. But anyway I'll have a chance to introduce myself later on.

Back on track now, the reason for this post is to have some opinions on a purchase I might end up making.

I came across a Silver 1987 Honda Prelude 2.0Si 5speed with 98,0XX orignal miles for $300 ($350 if I want the CD/Mp3 player included). He has replaced and put on new front driver side and passenger side hub and bearings, also has just put on new brake pads and calibers.

Now with the only issue he saids it has-
NEEDS clutch replaced
NEEDS wiper switch
Has rust on front passenger side fender

He will also drive the car and drop it off at my house if bought. (Since it's driveable)

This will be my first car, and I have noone who want's to go check the car out with me (due to it's an old car and they say I'm stupid for just not buying a Civic ). I have some knoledge on Honda's but not so much on what I should check before I buy it. I also have been driving auto, so this will be my first encounter with a manual car.

If you guy's could be kind enough to give me some advise on what I should check out before purchase. And what I should check to see if the transmission is good, since its manual. And when you buy a car, all I will recieve is a pink slip right? Like he signs it and that's about it or there's more? I will be heading over to his part of the woods to see the car later on today, so if anyone could give me anything it would be a real BIG help. If I don't make the purchase today I lost my chance because he has a mechanique who will be seeing it a little bit after me, and his interested as well.

Please let me know guys, I really like this car and the deal sounds pretty good. Changing the clutch isn't a big deal since I have a neighbor who can help me with it. And the wiper switch, I was thinking if I replace it while I'm at it I install a 3gen steering wheel, and I also have 2 spare 4th gen Prelude seats, but anyway sorry for typing so much I just really have a thing for Preludes especially 2nd gens.

Names Marvin BTW, and I'm 18

Re: 87 Prelude 2.0Si 98,0XXorignal miles should I?

The rust and wiper motor are minor things, well, the rust is an issue but what can you expect from a car that is just about 22 years old

When you purchase a car, you need to have the title of the vehicle signed over to the new owner aka YOU. So make sure the title of the car is clean and clear of any liens <--look that up.

It's good that you found a 2.0Si, i had a 2nd gen Prelude myself, the Dx version with carburetors. Fuel injection is goooooooooooood Other than the clutch issue, for $350 i would pick it up. BUT, being your first car I would rather you look into a more dependable car with less years, perhaps a CB7 Accord as in your name?

good luck, let us know how you make out.

Re: 87 Prelude 2.0Si 98,0XXorignal miles should I?

Big thanks for the input man , really isn't going to be my "first car", it's more like my "first self bought car". I drive a 93 Accord which is my mom's car, and I don't go out much and since summers coming, most of the time is going to be family trips.

I was thinking buy it, and since I have private parking and till I have enough money and a better paying job, I'd spent my time repairing what needs to be repaired and also to learn how to drive stick on. Plus it's different no one around here gives any love to these cars, they all are stock on their hatchy's and tegs.

But anyway thanks once again, and just wondering isn't there a way to check if it's really the clutch that needs to be replaced and not the tranny?

EDIT: How do I check if the titles clear? ***Nvm, I googled it. Carfax does the trick.

That sounds cool too, buying it for cheap and saving it for a future project. 2.0si's are hard to find, especially with low miles.

I also had a CB7 Accord. It was a 1990 lx sedan. Freakishly reliable that took me to Canada and back in the of dead winter lol...

You just gotta love them man, nice looking cars. Always pictured the Accord as the Ludes younger brother. ...weird....I know but yea I always pictured it like that, reason why they are my favorite cars Honda ever made.

Back to topic-

Prelude will be in front of my front door tommorrow moring 9am (eastern time), willpost pics if you guy's are interested and turns out the car is darkish baby blue rather then silver, and it has a couple of new things installed.

Re: 87 Prelude 2.0Si 98,0XXorignal miles should I?

No buy guys, regret it big time. Car wasn't meant for me, it had minor problems that I could've easliy fixed in no time and with less then $500 but I failed to realize it before I said no. On top of that the car was a smoker car and it was doing real bad to me due to my asthma, regret it but what can I do the car's under someones else's name now. I'm really regreting it now but can't do nothing about it now, thinking about picking up a 90-93 Accord Coupe or a 4th gen Prelude really don't know. Here's what the car looked like

and here's what I'm looking into buying
