speedo probs and more...

Hey all, just found what is going to be my saving grace with my 2nd gen Prelude. My wife and I have had this car for about 2 yrs now and it is time to bring her back to glory. So right now I have already replaced the speedo cable and gauge assembly, and still have the speedo drop out on me. Any ideas???

Next I have a few water leaks one in the trunk (over the drivers side tail light), and some where on the passenger side, any ideas on fixing or locations that would be great.

Also just was curious is there any where out there that sells after market interior parts, new seat cover, carpets and such. Thank you for any help.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Just got a 87 prelude here that used to be my aunts and I'm having similar speedometer problems. Is the speedometer working any at all? There is a circuit board on the back of the speedometer cluster that tends to go bad from my research. I think its called an signal amplifier or something. if you got a used one maybe it was bad on it too. I had a leak in the back floor that was from the sunroof drain in the body panel being stopped up. You can buy new seat covers and carpet from several companies. Just do a google search. I'm trying to decide between fixing the factory seats or getting aftermarket. hope this helps I'm learning as i go also.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Helps a lot I have had this problem on two gauge clusters, the origenal and a used replacement. Thanks for the heads up on the leak that is wonderful help:) The speedo works quite often, but it will just drop out and then a wang on the gauge set and it starts working again. I will look into that, but it might just be a loose connection also, I had some really bad brakes that shook the car like crazy that is all fixed now.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Yeah From how it looks on here lots of people have speedometer problems. I think all the speedometer clusters may be dying from old age. I have read of the sensor where the cable plugs in the cluster dying , the circuit board on the back dying and that sometimes pulling up the parking brake helps it come back on. Is your leak in the back floor also or just the trunk? the seal around the trunk could be gone or the seals around the tail lights. I can send you pictures of where the sunroof drains are later this week when i visit my dads house where my car is right now. I have the back of mine pulled apart so i can show you the outside and inside and what i did to fix my leak but yours might be different. Let me know what you end up doing with the seats and how it works. I think I'm going to raid junkyards for the originals and the get the originals covered again. Glad to see someone actually signing into the 2g forum. Nobody else around here where i live has one and I've had to have most parts shipped from other states. Let me know what ends of working in case I have the same problems and I'll do the same.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Hey man, thats so funny that you just suggested that place. A lady at work said her husband used it and I'm going to the North Atlanta Location friday because they have an 87 and then if I don't find everything I'll go to the other atlanta locations. Is there anything you have been looking for that you want me to pick up for you that you cant find ? Looks like everything is really cheap there so I could easily pick something up for you. I plan on pulling everything I can fit in my mom's van (If someone else hasn't already raided it. That way if I need it in the future I'll have it. I'll pull the gauge cluster if its still in it. Looks like they only charge 10 or 20 bucks for it. I already have one on the way that way if they both work I could send you one I know works. That would eliminate one part and let you know if its the actual problem or not. Ive seen lots of aftermarket gauges that you can mount on the inside of your car but I don't think it would look that good and might be hard to find a place to mount it in view. I personally would think that a 3rd generation gauge cluster would be easiest as far a wiring but I havent seen the back of one. I could try to look at one at the junk yard and compare the plugs. I don't know much about the later model preludes but I would guess that they have the electronic sensors instead of cables which would make it harder to convert too i would think and the plugs on the back would be very different but I'm not sure. Either way I would think you would probably have to do some kind of custom work on your dash to make the later model one fit and probably have to have the dash painted, or recovered in something to make it not look bad. I've seen some sites that do gauge cluster repair for certain cars but not sure if anyone does that for our cars. I'm sure you already tried this but check all your connections, and maybe follow the wires and see if there are any ground connections that arent getting a good clean connection and clean them up. If you have more than one cluster maybe you could try taking them apart and trying the different components in different combinations. Like taking just the speedometer piece off one and putting it in the other, or just the amplifier board off one and putting on the other, and so on and so . Until you have tried all the possible combinations. That way if a different piece is bad in each one you will be able to rule that out. Would be a lot of work though. Hope you get it working bud. I'll should be able to let you know the results of mine by friday or saturday.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Do the non SI models have the same style speedometer? or did just the SI ones have the weird setup ours have? might try a non SI one and make it fit. One more thought 85-89 accord cluster? The accords didnt have the electronic sensors on the back of the cluster, they were just cable driven. So the speedometer would def work. You would then have to see if the other wire plugs fit. I bet at least some of them would fit, the others might require you rewiring it. but if you decide to go that route and have to make it fit anyway I would say go accord, that way the speedometer is all mechanical. But then you still have to redo the dash somehow to make it work. Sounds like a ton of work.

Re: speedo probs and more...

Cool, I wish I had the time, money, and space. But I have found a couple of places that state if you go in and solder all the connections on the signal amplifier, ( the part where the cable goes into the cluster) and the other one I came across was someone just went and tightened the signal amplifier back down and it worked. Don't know how well these work but I am going to try! (I like doing crazy stuff like that) and if you want to replace parts like the signal amplifer the site hondapartscheap.com has the indvidual parts for sale for the speedo. hope that helps!

Re: speedo probs and more...

Man my speedometer isn't coming along much better. Mine is working as of today using a speedometer gauge and amplifier board from a cluster I pulled today. However, it isnt smooth at all its very jumpy. I tried the whole gauge cluster I pulled at first but It didnt work any better that way and some of the shift indicator lights were out in it. I just can't find parts around here. I've tried everything near me and no Si Hood. Only the hoods for the regular model. Damn I wish I could just find a hood and a gauge cluster that worked. Sunroof drains still seem like they are working well. However, I noticed that my trunk leaks also. I can't tell if its the seal around the trunk or around where the spoiler mounts to it. Its def getting in somewhere on the drivers side corner though. Gonna take a few days off from thinking about it I think then come back with a clear head.

Re: speedo probs and more...

I think the water leak in the trunk is the seal in the taillight, a hood I could swing that if I could figure out how to ship it. white might be tough but another color maybe a few 85-87 in the places around here. as far as the speedo cable goes maybe some lube on the connection point maybe some on the gauge it's self. Is the hood different on the SI models? LOL I never noticed. I just replaced my heat controls and got some 91 SI seats for the front. next on my list is still that speedo and a window reg for drivers side.

Re: speedo probs and more...

I can't see the difference in the hood but I found new hoods for the prelude and they said Except Si. So I'm guessing they had some slight difference to fit the bigger engine. If you figure out shipping costs then let me know. I might be willing to pay the extra just to get the part. Do the 91 model seats fit? Yeah I think since my gauge is somewhat working I'm gonna just live with it until I get some other things done. I need a motor or regulator or something for my drivers side, not sure what yet I'll tackle that soon. Maybe I'll try to find seats from a newer one. I'm still thinking of aftermarket seats too but that would be down the road once I get everything else fixed.

Re: speedo probs and more...

To ship the hood you might be able to get packaging from a new hood from a local body shop. I'm gonna make a list and take some pictures of all the small parts I need in case you or someone else has any of them or happens to see them when at a junkyard. Do you have any idea where to get clips for trim that goes around the window on the quarter panel. Everytime I order from a honda website I find out what i need is discontinued (big surprise). If you need anything else let me know and I can let you know it we have it here.

Re: speedo probs and more...

if you're lucky enough to find interior plastic pieces or a dash in good shape, buy it even if it's the wrong color. they mike vinyl spray dye (along the same lines as spray paint) that is easy to use!

Re: speedo probs and more...

Honda lists a speed sensor on the transmission for our cars, However, I havent seen anywhere that carries it. I think it goes in the transmission and the cable attaches to it

Re: speedo probs and more...

I had a problem with my Speedometer dropping off at times changing the board didn't help, and the cable was fine the censer in the transmition is fine i found that the censer that attaches the cable to the back of the cluster is not reading the speed but working with every thing else on the cluster so thats the fist place i would look if your haveing any problems with speedometer dieing i just replaced that and mine works fine..
