Winding Noise

I have a 87 lude 2.0Si. I just left my house to go to work and my car started making this intermittent winding noise. Any ideas. Take into account that it is -26C right now. I dont know if its just the cold weather playing with something or if something is on its way out. Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Yes it is a manual but i dont think its the tranny. I heard the noise before i left work so i investigated and it most deffinately sounds like it is the power steering pump. My steering has been pretty hard lately too so i think thats the issue.

could be the belts on their way out or maybe too tight, or low power steering fluid or pump getting tired, my 4th gen has a whining noise occasionally, i think the mechanic tightened the belts too much when motor was fully rebuilt, havnt bothered to check it out yet tho

also my da integra has a buggered a/c pump, sounds like a bloody fishing reel with a very large fish hooked on it when it idles below 1000rpm! only when a/c is turned on tho

Re: Winding Noise

On really cold mornings on my 1986 Si as well a 1988 Accord I used to own and my wife's old Acura Integra the speedometer cable makes a horrible howling noise. It is nothing major apart from being really horrible to listen to. I can say the 86 Si has been the worst of the bunch for that problem, but it is only when it gets in the low teens and below. Apart from that, any sort of mechanical winding noise has been pretty apparent from most of the cars I have owned below a certain temperature. I had both a Saab 9000 and a 1987 Porsche 944 which were both notorious for that (actually the 944 was notorious for a lot of things such as running off with my wallet and emptying it every time I turned around...gosh I love Hondas!!!).
