'84 Prelude: Interference engine?

I just bought a Prelude with 198,000 miles, I just wanted to know if it was an interference type engine? How urgent it a timing belt replacement with this kind of mileage?

Also, the serpantine belt squeals occasionally, but can be stopped by shutting off the headlights. I assume it either needs a belt, or may be corrected by lubing the tensioner? The car is dual carbbed, and doesn't want to idle lower than 1,300-1,500RPM. I figured the choke is stuck on?

Crappy pictures, but the wind was blowing like crazy so I did these quickly.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

are you serious with that plate? haha

The belt is easily checked. (sorta) With any older vehicle i'd say check the belt. I've been told it is an interference engine though i could've sworn it wasn't. don't take any chances regardless.

Clean the carbs, adjust the timing, check the plugs, wires, distributor, fuel filters (engine and one behind rear left wheel) , air filter, charcoal canister(?). And uh maybe you wanna check for a vacuum leak.. .ya i know haha

Looks like you have a nice clean 2nd though. Wow, everything looks so straight. Let us know if you have anymore questions. :)

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

Yeah, I did get that plate, haha. It's the most stupid vanity plate ever, I will admit, but I've always wanted it. Even if it's only to have them to hang up on a wall someday.

Yeah, I would be surprised if it is an interference engine. Are there any actual advantages to the design of one, or is the only difference that you have to spend a crapload of money if a $14.00 rubber belt snaps?

I will check that stuff on Thursday, when I can get it into the shop. It still runs and drives just fine, but it does have a high idle. It seems to be acting like a stuck choke, high idle, warming up but still on the cold side (on the gage), and hesitating at high RPM.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

i really don't know. haha Maybe you get more power out of it?

Another thing about your high idle could be due to a over tight throttle cable. Does it feel like the peddle responds to quickly? Maybe your problem lays there.

haha and that plate is just plain silly.

I wish my timing belt was 14 bucks. I just spent 75 on one.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

Is that for this car? It was $14.00 for my old Hyundai. My local NAPA can get me one for this car for $20.95.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

Umm yeah dont do that! i thought my car was good just like you! And thinking it was a non-interference motor, then low and behold belt snapped, pistons shot up into my valves! now i am rebuilding my engine! lol =D

So its simple pop off valve cover take off the timing belt cover and check for wear! But to be on the safe side, i would replace just to feel better! haha

Also that plate if funny as HELL! lol

And as for the high idle issue, check the placement of the cable it could be mis-aligned, also like prelude 85 said, your cable could be too tight.

But if i remeber correctly, my motor was doing that too right before my belt snapped!

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

I think I figured out the idle and hesitating problem - an air leak. There's the air flow sensor on top of the intake, which does not fit tightly and always has a small gap. So, do I make a gasket for it or just use some gasket sealer?-

Yes, that plate will be going right on whatever car I get next. Due to the circumstances, I have to sell this car.

It is an interference engine. I was curious about the same thing because my timing belt looks pretty cracked.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

Yeah, I just don't have time to fix its issues. A kid bought it from me as his first car - he's thrilled and has the time and money to fix it up. I'm pretty happy for him!

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

this will make things easy to know about hondas they are all interferance all cause they are run by a timing belt. now most of all timing chain driven cars are non interferance engines. im not all but im saying most i know for sure hondas are interferance.

Re: '84 Prelude: Interference engine?

I caught a lucky break with my old 88 econo-stang. One of the 4 cyl they made during the oil crisis. Driving through town and the timing belt went. I was lucky it was a non-interference engine.
