84 caught fire??

My 84 Prelude has been in the shop for a little over a year now. It had a complete body makeover. 1 month ago it was put in the mechanic shop. It has not been worked on in several days. The keys were not in it and it was not started for at least a week.

This morning I received a call from the shop. The car was smoking heavily from under the dash. He said the wiring harness was trashed. The interior has smoke damage. It was fine at 7 a.m. but was smoking at 8 a.m. No one was in the shop during that time.

What could have caused this to happen if it hasn't been started? The only thing I have been able to find is if the lighter was pushed in and was stuck but it does not have the lighter in it so that isn't it.

Is there any other explanation?

Re: 84 caught fire??

I've never had a problem with this shop in 6 years. I can't understand how it could be a short if the car hasn't been started in so long. It literally has only been started twice in over a year. If the head of the shop doesn't understand how this could have happened. The ignition wasn't partially on, no lighter in it, nothing was turned on. The car hasn't been moved either in a month. When it was moved, it was pushed from shop to shop.

Re: 84 caught fire??

yeah but is it connected to the battery, like you can still turn your lights on when the car isnt running or the ignition is turned right? I can in my fourth gen, the wires should still be hot even if the car is not running.

In your case the wires were HOT-TO-TROT!!! lmaooo, sorry i had to get it in..sorry bout the car too.

Was your car hooked up to the battery?

Re: 84 caught fire??

The battery was hooked up. And now I am totally depressed. This car was a junk yard car I bought for my son following some really serious injuries. He had a Tramatic Brain Injury and the docs thought something like restoring a car would help him. He did what he could and I sent it to the body shop. Funny the mech shop went through it over a week ago to check the wiring and such before I brought it home.

They said it was fine mechanically but apparently it wasn't.

Re: 84 caught fire??

Well, I just got off the phone with a mechanic friend who agrees with the critter theory. The car is really sweet looking. My son had it painted a deep forest green with a spoiler on the back, hood scoop on the front and black trim. The former rust bucket has new sheet metal and a smooth body.

My son is doing well but he still has issues and is really upset about this. I have no recourse on the garage. It is the school where I work (state institution). They can't be held responsible for damage. The car sat for 3 years waiting it's turn to get in. It has no plates or insurance. I've already spent several thousand on restoration and can't afford anymore. I guess it will sit until I can save the money for a complete re-wire.

Re: 84 caught fire??

I didnt even think of this before but:

There are three 2g preludes in my junkyard. Two of them are the SI version and I dont know what the other is. If yours is an Si I can probably hook you up w/ a harness. If yours isnt an Si and this 3rd unknown lude isnt either, I can still probably hook you up. Depending on how much wiring harness you need the price could range from 20-40 dollars(+shipping) and that is junkyard price. You just have to let me know which wiring you need and send a picture if possible. I'll be going to the junkyard within the next week but I wont go until I have your response. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Re: 84 caught fire??

Well, I have the car home now. It isn't as bad as I initially feared. The fire never got into the motor at all. It was confined to an small area under the dash.

Damage and has to be replaced:
dash
visors
rear view mirror
seats are ok but will need recovered
sun roof window (cracked)
sun roof cover
windshield (cracked)
stereo
gauges
wiring harness
headliner

That is what the preliminary finds are. Also it appears to have been mice got into the wires and gnawed on them causing a short.

I will get pics as soon as my son shows me how to use the good camera.

Does it appear like it may be fixable from the damage listed?

Yeah I looked at my car, and it burnt pretty good on the dash. I was only able to look at it at nighttime, but tomorrow I'm going to take a really good look and get those pictures put up here for my mom. It will take a lot of work, but it can be fixed. From the looks of the damage to the wiring harness under the dash. It does appear the whole harness needs to be replaced.

Here is the pictures of the damage to the interior of my Prelude. If ya'll need better pics please let me know and I will get them up here asap.

Well had to do one more reply to get the rest of the pics up here. there is also 3 pics of the exterior of the car to just because it looks so good. Sorry had to make 2 replies to this, but lots of pics of the interior of the car. Like I said in the last reply if you need more pics please let me know. I'm planning on taking more pics after I take the dash board out to show more of the damage.

Re: 84 caught fire??

Yeah I'm basically going to have to replace everything on the interior of this car. It's been a project since 2003 or 2004, and I thought it was going to be finished this year, but now with the entire interior having to be replaced pretty much it's going to be a couple more years.

Re: 84 caught fire??

the easiest way to do this is to make a list of every thing you need and cross it off as you get it. i have access to 3 or 4 2nd gen preludes for parts so if you have a hard time finding parts let me know

Re: 84 caught fire??

Well I have a rather long list of items that I know will have to be replaced. Any help with this will be awesome.

Entire Dashboard
Carpet
Whole Wiring Harness under the dash
Center Counsel (5-speed)
Climate Control Unit
Vents on and under the dash
Windshield
Sunroof
Headliner
Headliner part for the sunroof
Guages
All switches on dashboard (flashers, sunroof, etc.)
Entire rearview mirrow assembly
Sun Visors
Dome Light
All trim back to the back side windows

These parts weren't damaged in fire, but looking for them. The seats front and rear, and all seat belts from and rear.

If anyone can help me locate these parts I will be very thankful to you. If you have the parts and willing to part with them let me know a price. I wouldn't be able to buy everything at once, but slowly. Thank you for all the help, and I'm really happy my mom found a website for the Prelude.

Re: 84 caught fire??

You can probably get new seatblets from a Honda dealership. lifetime warranty, ya know.

Really sucks though. These cars are a bit iffy on electrical stuff. I know a few little bulbs won't turn on even though i've changed them. My stereo works with the key off as well as the cigarette lighter.

Sorry about this though, i'm really glad you plan on holding on to your 2nd gen though. that's what it's all about!

The trim comes out pretty easily. I managed to pull my trim out with out anymore of it breaking. It takes a bit of time, but it's all good. lol. What would you charge for a rear window for the prelude? I called the glass places around where I live at, and they told me $1500 for that window. My rear window also has some damage to it as well. I just noticed it today.

That piece under the dash that I need is the heater coil assembly. It's pretty much melted to death. lol.
