Icon1 79PreludeIgnition

Hello all,
I am having problems with my 1979 Prelude, which is not getting a hot enough spark. I've checked the plugs, plug wires, coil, and distributor. My timing light won't pick up a single signal from all but one sparkplug wire, which only seems to trigger the light once in a while. I've come to the conclusion that this problem is probably the ignitor chip (though nobody says how to test it). Would it be better to just buy another chip for $69-$160, or the Petronix ignitor electronic ignition conversion kit for $108?
Thanks for your time,
Seth
